What is third party property damage motorcycle insurance?

This type of insurance covers you for damage you accidentally cause to someone else’s property — for example, if you hit someone’s Porsche with your motorcycle. This is known as legal liability cover, and most policies offer up to $20 million or $30 million in cover.
You won’t be covered for damage that occurs to your bike, like if there’s a bad storm or if it’s ruined in an accident. For that, you’ll need to get comprehensive motorcycle insurance.

How much does third party property damage motorcycle insurance cost?

The cost of insurance varies hugely based on your personal profile and the bike you ride. To give you an idea of costs, we got quotes from 5 popular motorcycle insurance brands. Keep in mind though, your own quote will likely differ and this should be used as a guide only.

How does third party property damage insurance differ from other third party insurance?

There are three types of ‘third party’ motorcycle insurance. We’ve broken them down below.

Compulsory third party insurance (CTP)

This insurance is a legal requirement. In NSW and QLD, you must buy CTP before you can register your motorcycle. In other Australian states and territories, CTP is included in your registration, so if your motorcycle is registered, you’re already covered. This insurance protects you against costs if you injure someone in an accident—it covers people, not property.

Third party property damage insurance

This insurance covers the costs if you accidentally damage someone else’s property. For example, if you crash your bike into an expensive car and it costs thousands to fix, third party property damage cover takes care of it. This benefit is often called legal liability cover because it pays for damage you’re legally responsible for.

Third party fire and theft insurance

This includes everything third party property damage insurance does, plus protection for your bike if it’s damaged by fire or stolen.

Our expert says

"What a lot of people don’t realise about third party property damage insurance is that some policies include cover for damage that occurs if you’re in an accident with an uninsured motorist. Essentially, this means that if someone without insurance damages your motorcycle, you could be entitled to up to $5,000 worth of cover to help with the repairs. Not all third party policies offer this though so it’s important to compare policies."
