Drivers can lower their premiums by choosing a higher basic excess or qualifying for a 'no claim' privilege discount.
Pros
Apia car insurance is restricted to Australians aged 50 and over, with policy features designed for the driving profiles of this specific age group.
For stolen vehicles under 10 years old declared a total loss, the policy allows for a new replacement car up to a $40,000 limit.
Cons
The policy specifically excludes coverage for any costs associated with the replacement of lost car keys.
Special conditions may be applied to the policy that restrict or exclude certain drivers based on their individual driving history or the specific vehicle type.

How we picked these
Finder Score for car insurance
We analyse over 30 car insurance products across insurance providers, and rate each one for price and features. We collect up to 36 quotes per product, for male and female drivers in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. Quotes are collected for 20 year olds, 30 year olds and 60 year olds, assuming an excess of $850 for a 2020 Toyota Corolla 4 door sedan model, with an average 15,000 kms driven each year. While we are not allowed to display actual quotes, our Finder Score aims to serve as an indicative guide to how cost and feature competitive a product might be for you.
Our feature score assesses each product for more than 15 features across loss and damage coverage, repairs and assistance coverage, personal items coverage and policy coverage. Features we assess include but are not limited to legal liability, essential repairs, new car replacement, car hire events, roadside assistance, agreed or market value, windscreen damage and natural disaster coverage.
The following features and options are available through Apia car insurance:
Tailored for over 50s. Policies are designed specifically for the needs of drivers aged 50 and over, reflecting the typical driving habits and experience of this demographic.
After-claim expenses. Comprehensive policies provide up to $1,500 to assist with costs such as emergency travel, accommodation, or transport if the vehicle is stolen or damaged in a covered incident.
Legal liability protection. Coverage includes up to $20,000,000 for legal liability if the use of the vehicle causes loss or damage to another person's property.
Lifetime repair guarantee. Any repairs authorised by the insurer are guaranteed for as long as the policyholder remains the owner of the vehicle.
Uninsured motorist cover. Third-party policies include up to $5,000 for damage to the vehicle caused by an entirely at-fault uninsured driver, provided the other party's details are supplied.

No, standard car insurance policies with Apia Insurance, including Comprehensive cover, don’t cover mechanical breakdown. However you can claim roadside assistance for issues like towing after a breakdown, if you’ve paid for the optional Apia Roadside Assist cover. Hope this helps!

If my car is registered and insured then runs out of rego is my car still covered by insurance
Finder

Hi Erin,
In regards to compulsory CTP insurance, each state and territory has different laws so it depends where you live. For instance, in Queensland, when you run out of registration your vehicle is still covered for the CTP personal injury insurance on the vehicle for an additional 30 days. However in the ACT, if an accident occurs involving a vehicle that is unregistered, the vehicle will also not be covered by CTP insurance and the driver and owner may ultimately be financially liable for the damages paid to the injured person. In addition, owners and drivers of unregistered vehicles face hefty fines.
Regarding your own comprehensive or third party damage insurance, most insurers require the car to be registered as part of their policy conditions.
We don’t currently have this brand on our panel. If you’d like to get a policy with APIA, you can head to their website or compare car insurance from a bunch of other insurance companies with Finder.

Hi Rolf,
Thanks for getting in touch with finder.
Sorry to hear about the serious damage of your car. With the comprehensive car insurance offered by APIA , they will replace your car after a total loss if your vehicle is less than 2 years old. I would suggest that you get in touch with them to know more about this claim. Best to revisit your policy as well so you can check whether your level of cover includes car replacement.
Australian Unity car insurance, underwritten by Allianz, offers two levels of cover, the freedom to choose your own repairer and an easy 24-hour claims service.
With a higher-than-average price but no particularly impressive benefits, Allianz was outperformed by many other car insurers in the 2024 Finder Insurance Awards.
With strong cover and reasonably-priced policies, AAMI performed well in the 2024 Finder Awards. However, some popular benefits are missing and cheaper options are available.

Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
