Fact checked

If you live in South Australia, you can get RAA roadside assistance. It offers three levels of protection, standard, plus and premium, starting at $8.58 per month. You automatically become a member when you sign up, which gives you access to member discounts and money off premiums, fuel, movie tickets and more.

What is RAA?

RAA is a vehicle club that has been operating out of South Australia since 1903. It provides a range of member services such as roadside assistance, car and travel insurance, travel and accommodation products and more.

What does RAA Roadside Assistance cover me for?

RAA offers three roadside assistance policies. They can cover you for the following:

  • Roadside callouts anywhere in Australia. A standard policy comes with four callouts a year.
  • Service entitlement. RAA'S policies also come with free road service entitlement, which is calculated from the designated RAA country depot to the breakdown location.
  • Towing. If RAA can't get you going, it will tow your vehicle for free for up to 200km with the top-level policy.
  • Taxi. If your vehicle needs to be towed, RAA will reimburse you for the cost of a taxi with its premium policy.
  • Flat tyre. All policies will swap a flat tyre for your spare for you.
  • Lockout. If you lose your keys or lock them in your car, RAA will help get you back into your car.
  • Trailer or caravan towing. RAA will service and tow your trailer or caravan if you break down.
  • Emergency fuel. If you run out of fuel when you're out, RAA can sell you enough to get you to the nearest petrol station.
  • Flat or faulty battery. RAA can fix this for you. If you need to buy a new one, RAA's plus and premium policies come with a $20 discount.
  • Bicycle road service. If you break down or puncture your bike, RAA will also help out with repairs or arrange a taxi (up to $55 a year).
  • Mobility scooter road service. If your mobility scooter breaks down or gets a flat tyre, RAA will repair it or arrange a taxi (up to $55 a year).
  • Interstate service. If you break down in another state, you'll be entitled to the exact same benefits as you would in South Australia.

What do I do if my car breaks down?

The most important thing to know is the RAA Roadside Assistance number: 13 11 11. Call that and they can come out to get your car fixed. If they can't, they'll organise a tow. It's also helpful if you know:

  • Your RAA member number
  • Your registration number
  • The make, model and colour of your car
  • Where you've broken down, e.g. the street name, area or any other distinguishing landmarks
  • Details of what happened
