Is price everything?

If you're worried about price, you'll want to make sure you're getting the lowest usage and supply charges on the market. However, watch out for rates that are only low thanks to discounts or deals which may expire after some time has passed.

There are two main discount types:

  • Guaranteed discounts. These will apply to your bill no matter what for the benefit period.
  • Conditional discounts. If you meet a particular condition, the discount will apply. For example, pay on time discounts reduce your rates so long as you aren't late for a payment. Otherwise, your rates may increase with the discount removed or suspended.

What rebates can I get in VIC for gas?

Energy rebates will return some part of your energy bill, so long as you qualify. Here are some current gas rebates for Victoria:

  • Winter Gas Concession. HA natural gas discount for eligible concession holders during winter.
  • Energy Supplement. One-off payment to support low-income Victorians with their energy bills.
  • Excess Gas Concession. For eligible concession card holders with extremely high annual gas bills.
  • Non-mains Energy Concession. For households who rely upon alternative sources of energy for staying warm and cooking, including LPG, firewood and heating oil.

See our rebate page for more information on rebates and concessions.

Get your landlord or agent to do it.
Discuss the details and let your landlord handle the connection. More often than not, the landlord will be responsible for the property energy account when you are renting.

Do you have a choice of gas provider?

Yes. Residents of Victoria are able to choose both their electricity and gas retailers from any on the market.

However, if you are part of an embedded gas network where the property owner buys gas and resells it to tenants, you may not be able to choose your gas retailer, although a separate meter should be installed for you. Either way, you will be able to appeal to the Energy Ombudsman if you aren't being treated fairly.
