Origin Energy review: Our verdict

Origin isn't the cheapest energy provider on the block. But, it does have some well-discounted plans that are 12% to 18% less than the reference price.

What's the catch?

  • Discounts (or lack of) will vary between states
  • Your benefit period will last 12 months before you notice your bills creep up again

But the good news is that there is no lock-in contract or exit fees on most of Origin's offerings so you can change plans or move on to a new provider after your first year.

Origin also makes up for its higher rates by offering:

  • Everyday Rewards points
  • Extensive customer service support features (it got 4 out 5 stars on Finder for customer service)
  • Options to purchase GreenPower and Green Gas to help you offset your carbon footprint

My mother is an ‘Origin’ customer but does not get any discounts except for the pension. Can she switch to the ‘Origin Saver’ plan, if not, she will switch to another supplier that will offer her discounts.
