AGL vs Origin Energy

AGL has the upperhand with cheaper energy prices in most states. However, Origin's Everyday Rewards and slightly better customer service ratings may win you over.

Our verdict

AGL and Origin Energy are 2 of the largest energy retailers in Australia serving nearly 8 million customers between them. Here's a quick overview of how they stack up against - we do go in more detail further down.

Price and bundling discounts: Based on current price estimates, AGL's plans tend to be cheapest overall, usually by 2-3%. It's also the only retailer on Finder to offer a seniors' only energy plan. AGL's bundling discount for energy and internet for the first 12 months is also higher across most NBN plans.

Rewards and features: Origin gives you the option to earn Everyday Rewards points while AGL offers a rewards program where you can access discounts across a range of brands.

Customer service: Origin has a higher amount of favourable online reviews. It also had fewer complaints (as a percentage of customers) referred to the ombudsman in 2022.

Solar: AGL's feed-in tariffs are generally higher but Origin fares better with a superior feed-in tariff offer if you buy its solar PV system products.

Before you sign up to any plan based on price alone, consider other factors such as rewards and features, and customer service.

AGL vs Origin Energy: Rewards and features

Rewards and features are really where you can see some key differences between AGL and Origin.

AGL

  • Rewards. Access offers across a range of retailers including Booking.com, Myer, Kathmandu and more through AGL Rewards.
  • Internet bundle. $25 per month off for 6 months when you bundle internet with energy.
  • Mobile bundle. 50% off plan fees for 6 months, then $5 per month month off after that when you bundle a mobile plan with energy.

Origin Energy

  • Origin Spike. Get energy-use predictions based on your smart meter data. Use less energy than what is projected and you can earn Watts to be redeemed as cash or gift cards.
  • Internet bundles. Add internet with Origin and save $10 per month for 12 months.
  • Everyday Rewards. Earn 1 point per $1 charged on usage and supply costs. You also get bonus points when you first sign up.

Both AGL and Origin allow you to opt in for a GreenPower add-on for a small fee. It enables the provider to send back renewable energy back to the grid on your behalf based on your usage.

You can choose to add-on between 20% or 100% (for AGL) and between 25%, 50% and 100% (for Origin Energy).

The 2 providers also allows you to turn on Bill Smoothing (AGL) or EasiPay (Origin). This means you can change to a weekly, fortnightly or monthly billing option rather than pay quarterly.

  • Keep in mind: How much you're charged will depend on your average energy consumption. If you use less energy in a certain month, the credits will roll over. However, if you use more you may see your installments increase.

AGL vs Origin Energy: Customer Service

Both providers offer live chat support on their websites and mobile apps so you can manage your plan on the go. You can even call them or send them a message via Facebook or Twitter.

Origin performs slightly better when it comes to customer review ratings and number of customer complaints. However, both of the energy giants performed poorly for call responsiveness.

Reviews

Here's how they both stack up across multiple reviews (as of 21 February 2023).

AGL

  • Finder. 3.6/5 stars (104 reviews)
  • Product Review. 1.3/5 stars (2,119 reviews)
  • Trustpilot. 4.3/5 stars (3,042 reviews)

Origin Energy

  • Finder. 3.6/5 stars (78 reviews)
  • Product review. 4/5 stars (9,810 reviews)
  • Trustpilot. 4.7/5 stars (15,259 reviews)
  • Keep in mind: These reviews are subjective and may not reflect your experience. Use reviews to inform your research when choosing a new plan.

Complaints

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) publishes annual figures on the number of complaints lodged by energy customers.

The following figures are from 2021-2022:

  • AGL. 9,660 customers made complaints to AGL directly, 31% of those complaints were escalated to an Ombudsman. AGL had the highest percentage of complaints referred to the Ombudsman out of major retailers.
  • Origin. 21,238 customers made complaints to Origin directly with 17% of those complaints forwarded to an ombudsman.

Call responsiveness

AGLOrigin Energy
Calls taken within 30 seconds (%)60%53%
Average wait time1 min and 25 seconds2 mins and 15 seconds
Calls abandoned before answer (%)7%8%

Based on the AER's rating system, both AGL and Origin's call taken and abandon times fall within an acceptable range. However, it's the average waiting time that sets them back.

AGL vs Origin Energy: Solar Power

With AGL you'll get a higher feed-in tariff for the first 14kWh, before the rate drops down.

Origin offers mostly the same feed-in tariff on all its plans unless you buy its solar products.

Compare feed-in tariff ranges across AGL and Origin's electricity plans:

NSWVICQLDSAACT

Origin Energy2 - 8c/kWh5.2c/kWh2 - 8c/kWh2 - 8c/kWh2 - 8c/kWh
  • Good to know: Origin Energy and AGL both work with other brands to offer solar panel installation. When you get your solar PV system installed through Origin, you'll be offered a higher feed-in tariff up to 20c/kWh depending on the size of the system.
