How do ALDI mobile's broadband plans work?

ALDImobile's broadband plans are not the sort of standalone plans you may be used to. Rather than purchasing a plan and getting a wireless modem to plug into your house, you purchase an ALDI mobile SIM for your SIM-capable tablet or device and activate it with a data plan.

Once the data plan is active, your device will have access to Telstra's 3G and 4G mobile networks. You will not be able to use it to make calls or send texts unless you've also purchased a regular mobile plan, too. If your device with the SIM can act as a hotspot, you'll be able to access this mobile broadband from other devices.

ALDI mobile review: What we think

ALDImobile operates off the back of Telstra's 3G and 4G networks, which have the widest coverage in Australia. While their long expiry mobile broadband plans don't have good value in data per dollar terms, this is fairly standard for 365 day expiry. Still, there are other providers out there who might provide more data for less, so it's worth comparing.

Beyond that, ALDI does have the attractive feature of data rollover between recharges, though this is likely to be less useful on a year-long plan.

ALDImobile's data plans also offer these extra features

  • Data rollover. So long as you recharge your data plan within 24 hours of it expiring, any unused data from your previous purchase will roll over to your new plan.
  • ALDImobile app access. This app allows you to manage your plan, make payments and check your balance. It's available on both iOS and Android.

While they may be better known for their groceries than their gigabytes, here's what's good and bad about ALDImobile, here's what's good and bad about ALDImobile.

Pros

  • Long expiry on data makes it perfect for infrequent users or as a back-up to wired Internet or Wi-Fi.
  • Data-enabled SIM can be swapped between devices, making it versatile.
  • No bill shock – data is on a prepaid plan.

Cons

  • No access to the 5G network, unlike Telstra or Optus.
  • Plans aren't great value in strict dollar per gigabyte terms compared to monthly plans.
