Our verdict

This Citi account charges no account keeping fees, no overseas ATM fees and no foreign transaction fees.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Following the sale of Citi Australia to NAB, Citi bank accounts are no longer available to open for new customers. However, if you're an existing customer you can continue to use your account, so we've kept this information here for that purpose.

This transaction account is ideal for both day to day use here at home as well as when you’re travelling. It has no monthly account keeping fees and Citi charges no overseas ATM fees or international transaction fees either. Usually banks charge an international transaction fee of about 3% of the transaction value when a currency conversion is required, so not being charged this fee is a really big benefit of this account.

Keep in mind that the local ATM operator may still charge its own fee when you use an ATM overseas.

Pros

  • No monthly account or transaction fees
  • Fee-free ATMs withdrawals available
  • Fee-free instant money transfers globally

Cons

  • Not available for business
  • Lack of branches in Australia

I am an existing customer but was advised I needed to change over to NAB & transfer my money to them. So I can actually still use my Citibank card?

Hi Dianne, We can’t provide personal financial advice, your best bet would be to contact Citi directly about your personal account: you can reach them on 13 24 84. However keep in mind Citi is now owned by NAB, but the brand is still operating as usual in Australia so there should be no need to change your accounts.

The article “Debit cards with no foreign transaction fees” is helpful. However, it needs a piece of critical information. Take, for example, this Citibank Plus account. The MasterCard set the foreign currency exchange rate in the past, offering a favourable, near official FX rate. For instance, at this moment, USD is $0.642.

I recently noticed that Citibank/NAB uses its own less favourable exchange rates. For example, the ‘Citibank Sells USD Rate’ is $0.6307 – meaning a 1.76% margin the bank pockets. The Citibank/NAB may advertise a ‘fee-free overseas ATM’ as a feature, but your website should state how the foreign currency is calculated for complete transparency.

My question Alison, is will you add the ‘FX rates used’ to the above mentioned article?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for getting in touch with this. We are always working to add more data points to our comparison tables, so this is certainly something we will look to add in the future as it’s very helpful when comparing.

Thanks,

Hi

I have a Citibank debit card. I reside in Australia but will be travelling to Italy and France in the near future. Can I use my Citi debit card to withdraw cash from ANY ATM in Italy and in France ? Will these foreign ATMs charge me fees ?

I understand Citi will not charge me a fee for ATM withdrawals in these countries I’ll be visiting ?

Thanks

Hi, There are no withdrawal fees for transactions made at Citi ATMs overseas, but keep in mind that some third-party banks or ATM operators may charge their own fee. This will be displayed on the ATM before you proceed with the withdrawal.
