ING Home Insurance review

An ING home insurance policy is good if you want flexibility to add more and a big discount that only a small number of other insurers offer.

Our verdict

  • You get 30% off on your first year's premium – only a small number of insurers such as Virgin and Budget Direct also offer this.
  • It's good for flexibility – you can increase your excess to a level you want to reduce your premium.
  • You'll need to pay more if you want the sum insured safeguard. This is a type of protection that helps you avoid underinsurance.
Sorry! We currently don't have this brand on our panel. But don't fret, you can head to the ING home insurance website or compare a bunch of other home insurance companies with Finder.

Exclusions

All home insurance policies will have general exclusions. Here are a few exclusions from ING. For the full list, head to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

  • Floods (unless you get the optional add-on)
  • High tides (or any other action of the sea)
  • Wear and tear
  • Tree lopping
  • Loss or damage caused by insects, birds, vermin or rodents
  • Underground water seepage or pressure
  • Structural faults, design faults or faulty workmanship
  • Illegal acts or omissions

This isn't a full list of ING's exclusions so make sure you read the PDS for a more detailed breakdown. You can also head to general exclusions for more information.

Here are some information on ING home insurance complaints

We looked at home insurance complaint data from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) between July 2022 and June 2023. The data breaks down different underwriters and compares their business size to the number of complaints processed.

When comparing insurers, keep in mind that insurers with a larger market share serve more customers, so can potentially get more complaints.

Here's an overview of how ING (Auto & General Insurance Company Limited) did:

  • Auto & General had almost no complaints, which suggest customers are happy with the product and service.
  • It did receive 21 complaints, 12 of which had to be escalated by the AFCA.

The bottom line about ING

ING home insurance is issued by one of Australia's most popular insurers: Auto & General. It comes with a market-leading discount matched only by insurers such as Budget Direct (whose policies are also issued by Auto & General) and it appears to provide good customer service. If you want a more comprehensive policy that automatically includes a sum insured safeguard or other benefits like flood cover, you may want to look elsewhere.
