Woolworths Mobile roaming

Woolworths no longer sells travel SIMs, but you can still roam in over 60 countries with an add-on to your mobile plan.

We’re reader-supported and may be paid when you visit links to partner sites. We don’t compare all products in the market, but we’re working on it!

Heading overseas and wondering about the best option for calls and data?

If you have a Woolworths mobile plan, you can pick up a roaming add-on, or consider grabbing a travel or local SIM to meet your needs.

How does Woolworths roaming work?

By default, your Woolworths mobile plan won't work overseas. You'll have to purchase a roaming add-on to use mobile data and make calls in other countries.

You can purchase 1 of 3 roaming packs with Woolworths' SIM Only or new phone plans (but not on its prepaid plans):

  • $25 for 5 Day Roaming
  • $50 for 10 Day Roaming
  • $75 for 15 Day Roaming

These add-ons can be purchased through the Woolworths mobile app at any time, or via the account portal on its website.

What are the roaming add-ons?

Each of the Woolworths roaming add-ons come with different amounts of calls, texts and data that can be used in 63 different countries.

Here are the inclusions for each add-on, accurate as of 10 August 2021:

How do I add roaming to my plan?

There are 2 ways to add roaming add-ons to your existing Woolworths SIM Only or phone plan:

  1. Via the Woolworths mobile app
  2. Via My Account on the Woolworths website

The add-on will automatically be activated from midnight of the day after you purchase it, so only buy it when you're about to use it. You can't purchase it in advance of your trip.

Are these add-ons better than the Woolworths travel SIMs?

These add-ons are pretty similar in value to the old Woolworths Global Roaming travel SIMs.

The main advantage of the travel SIMs was their mostly 30-day expiry periods, compared to the short expiry add-ons.

For example, a $25 prepaid travel SIM offered 1GB of data that lasted 30 days, but offered zero calls and texts. Alternatively, you could pick up 200MB of data and 200 minutes of calls/200 SMS for $40.

  • However, Woolworths travel SIMs were discontinued in 2019 and are no longer available.

Is it cheaper to roam or buy a local SIM card?

This mostly depends on how long you're travelling for, and whether you're passing through multiple countries.

  • If you're visiting one country for a week or more, you're probably better off purchasing a cheap local SIM for your stay.
  • If you're visiting multiple countries, you'd have to purchase a local SIM for each destination, which could add up quickly. In this case, you're probably better off with a roaming add-on or travel SIM.

Will Woolworths travel SIMs be available again?

Woolworths prepaid travel SIMs were retired in 2019, and there is currently no indication of when or if they will be reintroduced.

If you're looking to use your Woolworths Mobile plan overseas, your only option at the moment is to purchase its roaming add-ons.
