Average gas price in SA

gas icon

Our research found that the average quarterly gas bill in Australia is around $210. SA came in at a slightly more expensive $211 per quarter.

StateAverage quarterly billAnnual bill
New South Wales$194$776
Victoria$239$956
Queensland$184$736
South Australia$211$844

Is price everything?

If you are mostly worried about finances, your best choice for a plan will be one with the lowest usage and supply rates. Be careful of rates that are only low due to discounts and promotional deals that could expire, leaving you with high prices once more.

There exist two main discount types:

  • Guaranteed discounts. Constantly applies with no other conditions, but usually with a set benefit period.
  • Conditional discounts. You must meet a condition for these to apply. If you have a pay on time discount and miss a payment, for example, your rates may rise significantly thanks to the discount being removed.

What rebates can I get in SA for gas?

An energy rebate will refund some of your energy bill if you qualify. These are some of the current rebates for gas in SA:

  • Medical Heating and Cooling Concession. A rebate for people who are unable to regulate their body temperature.
  • Cost of Living Concession. Helps those with low or fixed incomes with the cost of living expenses, including energy bills.
  • Energy Bill Concession. Eligible concession cardholders may get access to rebates to help cover electricity generating methods, such as LPG.
  • Residential Park Resident Concession. Concession for people living in residential/caravan parks with eligible concession cards/Centrelink payments.

See our rebate page for more information on rebates and concessions.

How do you get a connection?

If you are renting or moving into a house with a natural gas connection, you can get yourself activated in two ways:

Let your landlord or agent handle it.
Discuss the details and let your landlord handle the natural gas connection. In most cases, the landlord would be responsible for the property energy account when you are renting.

Compare online.
Use the Energy Plan Finder to compare gas providers and find a gas plan that works for you.

Do you have a choice of gas provider?

Yes. Residents of SA can freely choose their gas or electricity retailer.

However, if you're part of an embedded gas network where the property owner buys gas and resells it to tenants, you may not be able to choose your gas retailer. You may also not be able to appeal to the Energy Ombudsman if you aren't treated fairly, depending on your situation.
