Is an NBN 100 plan right for me?

NBN 100 is great for larger families where 3 to 4 people are actively online, even simultaneously.

It may also suit a smaller household that loves using the internet for gaming, watching 4K streams, working from home together, taking frequent video calls and downloading large files.

What's the difference between NBN 100/40 vs 100/20 plans?

The main difference between 100/40 and 100/20 plans are the upload speeds. 100/40 plans come with upload speeds of 40Mbps, while 100/20 come with 20Mbps upload speeds.

While download speeds are usually what people focus on, those spending their time at home taking video calls or sharing large files may want a faster upload speed, which is where a 100/40 plan would come in handy. Otherwise 100/20 should do you just fine.

• Good to know: 100/20 plans are slightly cheaper because you get a slower upload speed. There's around a $9 per month difference in the cheapest unlimited data NBN 100/40 and NBN 100/20 plans on Finder.

Is it worth getting NBN 100?

If you're in a household where the internet is often used for streaming and heavy online work, an NBN 100 plan could be suitable.

However, there's a reason the NBN 50 speed tier has maintained its popularity to this day as a great standard speed. It could be worth testing out before you take a step up to NBN 100 and pay a higher price, especially if you aren't sure your NBN connection type can achieve those speeds.

  NBN 100, also referred to as Premium or Home Fast, is one of 6 speed tiers established by the NBN.

  On this speed tier, you are able to get up to 100Mbps download speeds. This is the maximum speed available on this tier.

• Can I get 100Mbps on an NBN 100 plan?

  Theoretically, yes. However, your household's ability to actually receive 100Mbps speeds will depend on:

  1. Your NBN connection type. For example, if you have an FTTN connection, your ability to get fast speeds will be down to luck and your home's distance to the node through which fibre optic cables run.
  2. Your provider's ability to offer the best speeds on the NBN 100 tier, especially during the busy hours of the day (7pm–11pm). If you're looking to get 100Mbps speeds, make sure you sign up to a provider that has advertised typical evening speeds of 100Mbps or close to it.

  Usually if you input your address during sign-up, providers won't show you an NBN 100 plan if you can't access it, but it is always good to do your own research rather than relying on them.

• How much do NBN 100 plans cost?

  NBN 100 plans with unlimited data on Finder range from $78.90 to $119 per month. These are base prices and don't include any promotional discounts.

  It's always best to look around for offers as NBN providers are known to give 6-month discounts and other bonus freebies. This could lower your monthly internet bill by up to $20 a month for the first 6 months.

• Is it better to have a 40Mbps or 20Mbps upload speed on an NBN 100 plan?

  This depends on what you're doing on the internet. Having 20Mbps upload speeds should comfortably support most day-to-day tasks such as sharing content like pictures, uploading data and taking video calls.

  40Mbps upload speeds might be better suited to households or small businesses where multiple people need to share work with clients, take video calls simultaneously or back up a large number of documents to the cloud regularly.
