Vodafone has a range of mobile broadband plans available, both prepaid and postpaid, offering up to 100GB of data each month. While they come as just a data SIM, if you don't already have a compatible device, Vodafone also sells a couple of mobile broadband devices to use too.

How does Vodafone mobile broadband work?

Mobile broadband is designed for Internet access on the go, letting you get online using a SIM inserted into your tablet or modem. Vodafone has two types of mobile broadband plans: prepaid and SIM only postpaid.

SIM only postpaid

These plans are sold month to month, but you can also bundle them with one of Vodafone's modems on a 12-, 24- or 36-month repayment plan. Here's the range of postpaid mobile broadband plans available:

    Prepaid mobile broadband

When you first buy a prepaid data SIM from Vodafone, you can only pick a $30, $40 or $50.

How do I set up Vodafone mobile broadband?

If you already have your own mobile broadband device, all you need to do is pop in the Vodafone SIM you got with your plan, and you should be good to go. However, if you don't have a device yet, Vodafone does provide a couple of modems that you can get with a postpaid plan on 12-, 24- or 36-month contracts.

    • Vodafone Pocket WiFi 3 4G for $90 ($2.50 a month on a 36-month contract)
    • Huawei WiFi Cube 2 4G for $216 ($6 a month on a 36-month contract)

If you choose to leave your mobile broadband contract before it expires, the early exit fee will be equal to the remaining value of the modem.

The Vodafone Pocket WiFi 3 4G modem is also available outright for $79 on a prepaid plan.

    Vodafone mobile broadband coverage

While Vodafone does have a fledgling 5G network, you can't access it yet on any of its mobile broadband plans. Instead, you'll be restricted to its 4G network, which covers around 96% of the Australian population.

Typical speeds on the 4G network are around 2-100Mbps, but this depends on a lot of different factors. Average speeds are somewhere around 36Mbps for most users.

How to recharge Vodafone mobile broadband

The following only applies to prepaid mobile broadband services since Vodafone's postpaid plans automatically refresh month to month. You can recharge your mobile broadband in three ways:

    • My Vodafone app. If you have the My Vodafone app, you can select what prepaid service you want to recharge and follow the prompts.
    • Express Recharge. Vodafone's website has an Express Recharge section where you can recharge your prepaid service quickly and easily.
    • By phone. If you prefer, you can call 1300 650 410 to recharge your mobile broadband. You will need your prepaid mobile broadband number and your four-digit account PIN.

Vodafone accepts the following payment methods for recharges:

    • Credit or debit card, including Visa, Mastercard and American Express
    • PayPal
    • A recharge voucher, available from Vodafone stores, supermarkets, service stations and more
    • My Credit, a prepaid balance you can add credit to via the My Vodafone app

How do I check my Vodafone mobile broadband usage?

The easiest way is by using the My Vodafone mobile app or your online account on Vodafone's website. You can also set up your plan to give you usage alerts at 50%, 85% and 100% of your usage.

Can I get unlimited mobile broadband with Vodafone?

No, you can't. However, you can get "unlimited" data on Vodafone's SIM only mobile plans. These plans don't charge excess fees for going over your monthly data limit, but your speed will be limited instead.

Note that in Vodafone's terms and conditions, it states that you are not allowed to use its mobile plans as a replacement for home Internet, but you could tether your phone to your devices when you're out and about as a replacement for mobile broadband.
