What are Westnet mobile plans like?
Westnet has a set of four prepaid plans available to customers on a month to month basis, with full-month expiry periods.
- 8GB for $19.99 per month ($10 for the first 6 months). Unlimited talk and text in Australia.
- 16GB for $24.99 per month ($12.50 for the first 6 months). Unlimited talk and text in Australia.
- 40GB for $29.99 per month ($15 for the first 6 months). Unlimited talk and text in Australia.
- 55GB for $39.99 per month ($20 for the first 6 months). Unlimited talk and text in Australia, plus 100 international minutes.
All plans come with a free SIM and will deduct $10 from your prepaid balance to add 2GB when you reach your data limit. If you have no prepaid balance, your service will be cut off until you recharge.
Can I get a mobile handset with Westnet?
Alternatively, you can purchase your own mobile handset separately and combine it with a Westnet SIM.
Westnet mobile review
Westnet started offering mobile plans back in 2004, before being bought out by iiNet in 2008 and then repurchased again in 2015 when TPG bought out iiNet. Its plans are nice and simple, offering some good value for the first six months, during which you enjoy a considerable discount.
Here are a few standout features from Westnet's mobile plans:
Flexible no-contract plans
All of Westnet's plans run month to month, meaning you can switch or cancel anytime with no financial penalty.
Full-month expiry periods
Westnet is one of a few providers that don't have fixed expiry periods, but rather run the full length of each month. This means you won't have to spend extra on additional recharges during the year.
Customers can choose to pay money into their "additional prepayment" balance at any time, which will be used in chunks of $10 to pay for 2GB excess data packs past your cap. This prepaid balance is non-refundable and will be lost if you cancel your service.

Is Westnet worth signing up to? We ask our utilities expert and writer, Sam Baran.
All of Westnet's plans are excellent value for the first six months with the temporary discount. Once this has expired, they remain good value, similar to other great prepaid offerings from providers like ALDI Mobile, and amaysim.
Beyond this, the fact that Westnet has full-month expiry periods on its plans rather than 28 or 30 days means you'll be saved an extra recharge or so over the course of a year, improving the value a little.
How does Westnet compare?
To give you a better idea of how good Westnet's plans are, we've placed its 40GB plan against similar plans from Vodafone (its network carrier) and Kogan (another provider on the Vodafone network).
|Plan name||40GB SIM only||$30 Prepaid Plus||Medium 30 days|
|Plan cost||$29.99 ($15 for first 6 months)||$30||$29.90|
|Data allowance||40GB||15GB (+25GB on first 3 recharges)||13GB|
|Expiry period||Full month||28 days||30 days|
|Data per dollar value||$0.75 per 1GB ($0.38 per 1GB for first 6 months)||$2.00 per 1GB ($0.75 per 1GB for first 3 recharges)||$2.31 per 1GB|
|Included Extras||None||Data banking, 1.5Mbps "infinite" data, international minutes||None|
Westnet compares very well against other plans on the Vodafone network, including Vodafone itself. It wins on a sheer dollar per data basis, even once the initial six-month discount has worn off.
While it's true that Vodafone has more bonus features, Westnet is a better pick if you're not super interested in saving up your data in between months.
Westnet mobile international roaming
Westnet does not offer international roaming on its current mobile plans. Roaming is only available to customers on legacy Optus plans and is charged on an expensive pay as you go basis.
Westnet's most expensive plan comes with 100 international minutes you can use to call landlines and mobiles in other countries.
