Telstra drops Telstra TV price

Telstra’s dipping its toes into discount waters by chopping $10 off the asking price of Telstra TV.
When Telstra launched the Telstra TV back in October, it did so at a $109 outright price point, although you could also score one for free if you signed up for an eligible Telstra broadband deal before Christmas.
Over time, it’s added a number of streaming services to its repertoire, in line with Telstra’s ambition that it should be the one-stop shop for streaming services, at least if your tastes are relatively mass market. It can lay claim to streaming from the major free to air catchup services, as well as Presto, Stan and Netflix Australia, along with a curated selection of other streaming services.
The original launch price for the Telstra TV was $119, but at the moment Telstra is running a promotion where if you buy the Telstra TV online through its Web store they’ll chop $10 off the asking price.

In order to use Telstra TV you’ll need a Telstra ID to activate it, although despite Telstra’s claims a Telstra broadband connection isn’t strictly required for the Telstra TV to operate. You won’t, however, get the quota free parts of Telstra TV’s streaming services if you’re with another ISP.
$99 isn’t an unfamiliar price point for the Telstra TV’s most obvious competitor, the 3rd generation Apple TV which frequently gets dropped to that exact price point in store sales. The Apple TV doesn’t do so well for straight streaming services, but does have access to some other streaming platforms yet to appear on Telstra TV, as well as Airplay functionality if you have iOS or Mac devices to stream from that fill much of the Telstra TV gap. Here is how the two platforms compare at a technical level:
Telstra TV | Apple TV 3rd Generation | |
---|---|---|
Processor | Dual Arm A9 1Ghz Processor 32KB L1 Cache | Apple Single Core A5 |
RAM | 512MB | 512MB |
Storage | 256MB Flash NAND | 8GB |
Ports | HDMI 1.4, USB 2.0, MicroSD Slot, Ethernet | HDMI, Optical Audio, Ethernet |
Remote | Roku Standard infrared (IR) Remote | Apple TV Remote |
How do I sign up to use Telstra TV without a Telstra ID?
Hi Matt,
You will need your Telstra ID to receive your codes for Presto and Bigpond movies. Your Telstra ID is simply the email address Telstra provided you with when you signed up. Here’s for more information on recovering your Telstra ID.
Hope that helps,
