How do I find the best mobile plan for seniors?
Finding the cheapest mobile plan will require you to consider a few things:
- How much are you willing to pay? There are plenty of options for different price ranges starting as low as $5. Make sure you compare your options before deciding on one.
- Do you need extra features? While some plans come with features such as data banking and international call inclusions, consider whether you'll actually use these. Plans with fewer bonus features will usually still offer unlimited national calls and texts, with better value for data if you need it.
- How much data do you need? Check how much data you use by looking at your past bills or provider's online portal or app. Super low data plans don't really exist anymore so you'll want to find the cheapest plan that'll cover your needs.
- Are you willing to sign up long term to save? Long-expiry options exist which can give you enough features to last 6–12 months. This means you won't need to top up your plan every month, as long as you haven't run out before the expiry period. These plans are usually better value over time compared to month-to-month plans since you're paying upfront for a longer period of use.
Do seniors get a discount from Telstra?
Telstra offers a $19 a month discount on its Starter mobile plan if you have a valid Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Department of Veterans' Affairs card.
It'll end up costing $31 a month for 5GB which is fairly poor value compared to regular mobile plans that run on the Telstra network. Only consider it if you need to sign up with Telstra directly.
Otherwise, check out our top picks for mobile plans that run on the Telstra network.
Vodafone seniors discount on mobile plans
Vodafone offers seniors card holders 10% off monthly plan fees on its SIM-only plans that start at $53 a month for 60GB.
Again, this is fairly expensive compared to other mobile plans in our database, including our top picks in this guide.
In fact, the starting cost of a prepaid plan from Vodafone is cheaper at $35 per 28 days for 25GB.
Does Optus have a seniors discount?
Optus doesn't offer a seniors discount. If you want to sign up, the cheapest option is its prepaid plan - $35 per 28 days for 20GB.
Or, you can check out our top picks for mobile plans that run on the Optus network instead.
TPG mobile plans for seniors
While there are no seniors plans for TPG, its plans still offer great value for money, especially for the first six months with prices being discounted by 50%.
Prices start at $25 a month for 25GB without any promos.

Samsung phone plans
Interested in a new Samsung Galaxy phone as an outright purchase or on contract? Here is what you need to know.

I am looking at getting a refurbished phone but I also want to look at some kind of plan that is good for a year, includes national calls and texts and has a really good network coverage. Currently on OPTUS pre-paid which is expensive and often I have no coverage plus the other 000 probs are scaring me being single etc. I don’t talk to many people. I looked at Boost and Telstra are they pretty much the same thing with same costs and services. Am definitely not tech savvy but wanted to see what Black Friday deals might be best. thank you for your help.
Hi Jannine, you can check out our top picks for long expiry plans that last a full year here: https://www.finder.com.au/mobile-plans/prepaid-plans/best-long-expiry-prepaid-plans. If none of them work for you, there’s even a table where you can find all the available 12-month plans. You can then opt for the one that best fits your budget. Hope this helps.
Your info is financially comprehensive, but cost is only half the issue. I have great difficulty assisting elderly persons when they don’t have internet in their homes and can’t get to shopfronts (IF shopfronts are even available). They don’t need data, just a SIM that can be activated by a human, not AI. Because I’m not an official carer, I am not allowed to do these things on behalf of elderly (privacy laws). In my experience, the capable but tech-overwhelmed post-70 person wants a phone to talk/text, nothing more. And they don’t want to go through a 20-stage, frustrating process to get it. It frustrates me that I can’t do more to help.
Hi Anna, I truly empathise, it’s a really tough position to be in. There’s no perfect answer but being able to call a provider that is known for customer service might be the best solution in this situation. This includes the likes of ALDI Mobile, Tangerine and amaysim. They ranked at the top in our Customer Satisfaction Awards (as voted by Australians). https://www.finder.com.au/finder-awards/customer-satisfaction-awards/mobile-providers-satisfaction. Hope this helps.
Is the Samsung J3 6suitable for use with TPG sim
Hi Mary, TPG SIMs should work in any Android phone, including the J3. However, as the J3 is an older model and some imported overseas variants used different network frequencies, you’d need to double-check your specific model works with current Australian phone networks generally. Given the age of the J3, a newer model might be a safer choice.
I joined Belong – at the time, the plan was 2GB/$10 per month. It has increased progressively, most recently to 10GB/$25 per month. Back when I it was 7GB/$21 I wasn’t using the 7GB and I’ve got enough stored for nearly 2 years! (Before you mention it, there’s no-one I can ‘gift’ it to.)
If a provider was to offer a small data/small cost plan, it’s pretty evident that lots of people would be interested. Can we get a movement going that provides options for small data/small cost (even if you have to pay for 6 months worth in advance)?
Hi Di,
We hear you. One of the reasons unlimited data banking exists is to incentivise customers to stay on the plan. People don’t want to “lose” their banked data even if they aren’t actually using it.
With that said, there are quite a few telcos who offer small data/small cost plans and you don’t even need to commit to a long expiry.
For example, Cmobile offers a 3GB mobile SIM plan for $14.90 a month.
You might also want to consider a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) plan. These charge you for every call, text and MB. Prices start at just $4 for 60 days (plus your usage). Check out our PAYG mobile plans guide for more info.
I’m having trouble getting a direct response re keeping my current mobile number, is their a way to keep that number?
Hi David, pretty much all providers allow you to port your existing number. When you sign up for a plan you’ll be prompted whether you want to port your existing number. Are you able to tell me which provider you’re trying to reach or what plan you’ve signed up to?
