500GB plans are suitable for individuals and families who are using the Internet a lot but don’t need an unlimited plan. 500GB of data allowance will allow you to stream 50 hours of Ultra-HD content from Netflix every month, with 140GB to spare for other uses.

To get a clearer indication of how much data you’re using you can check your past bills and usage history. It can also be a good idea to find out how much data is used doing different kinds of activities and then multiply that usage by the number of people in the household doing those activities.

To help you find the right broadband plan, we've broken down the main types of activities and their expected data usage in this guide.

Is 500GB enough for you? Find out below

Figuring out how much data you need can be similar to asking "how long is a piece of string?". The diagram below shows how much data your main activities consume per 50 hours of usage. If you are using the Internet for the activities listed below for 50 hours per month or less, 500GB should be suitable for you. Families and individuals who are streaming and downloading multiple shows at once may require an unlimited data plan.

How much data do your activities consume?

  • Email. Typically email uses approximately 7GB per month - or about 1.4% - of a 500GB plan. The exception is if you’re frequently sending or receiving a lot of images or videos, and content that may be found in attachments.
  • Web surfing. Like email, general web surfing only uses 7GB per month and does not a account for much as part of a 500GB plan.
  • Facebook. If you’re doing a lot of video downloads on Facebook, it might take up 10–30GB per month. This would be a very high rate of usage. The average Facebook user browses for 10-20 hours a month, which translates to 2-4GB per month.
  • Skype. Skype calls require very little data, only using approximately 3MB per minute. If you were to call 25 hours a month this would use 4.5GB.
  • Online gaming. Playing games online typically use around 50MB per hour. Downloading and updating the games themselves will use more data than playing, some patches and downloads require up to 25GB (sometimes more).
  • YouTube. Quality is everything, for videos themselves and for data use. Low quality 240p videos use about 150MB per hour of viewing, while the highest available quality 1,080p videos use around 1.3GB per hour of viewing. You would have to watch 417 hours of Youtube on 1,080p quality in order to exceed the 500GB limit.

  • Streaming TV. Different streaming services have slightly different data usage rates, dependent on the quality. All streaming services generally use about 3GB per hour for HD videos, while Netflix in Ultra HD uses around 7GB per hour. At lower qualities, you may generally be looking at usages of around 500MB to 1.5GB per hour.

Activities that may require a higher data limit

The main data use in your household is generally likely to come from high-quality streaming and large downloads such as entire music libraries, games or movies. Overall, if you’re scraping the limits of a 500GB NBN plan, a 1,000GB or unlimited NBN plan might be exactly what you’re looking for.
