How do gotalk's mobile broadband plans work?

With gotalk, standalone mobile broadband plans don't allow you to make calls or texts like a regular plan. When you purchase a plan, you'll be sent a data SIM which you need to insert into a SIM-enabled device. Either provide your own tablet or other device, or buy a Huawei USB modem from gotalk with 1GB included data for $59.95.

Once the data plan is active, your device will have access to Vodafone's 3G mobile networks. If your device with the SIM can act as a hotspot, you'll be able to access this mobile broadband from other devices.

gotalk review: What we think

gotalk sells mobile plans as well as dedicated mobile broadband. Its plans come with no lock-in contracts and you can get a dongle from them if you don't have a SIM-enabled device of your own to use.

gotalk's mobile broadband plans are simple, but terrible value, even compared to the industry baseline of $10 for 1GB. Paying $10 for 500MB of data is a plain awful deal, and the value doesn't get any better at higher price points, unlike most providers. Even if you only want a little bit of mobile broadband data, you're much better off looking at plans from other providers.

To top it all off, gotalk only uses the 3G portion of Vodafone's network, meaning you can't even access 4G speeds. Being restricted to a 3G network only means your connection will be about 10 times slower than a 4G one.

Should you go with gotalk?

Pros

  • Mobile broadband. It can be useful to have a source of data while on the go.

Cons

  • No 4G speeds. gotalk's plans only take advantage of the 3G part of Vodafone's network, limiting available data speeds.
  • Very poor value. gotalk's recharges offer a measly 500MB for every $10 you spend recharging.
  • Low data options. If you need any significant amount of data, you simply won't get it from gotalk.

Summary: gotalk's plans may be a little too simple, offering very low data amounts for a very high price.
