How to get free 5G Internet this month from Telstra, TPG and more

Big brands are keen to get you to test run their fast home wireless Internet plans.

Home Internet plans are quickly becoming a go-to NBN alternative, especially now with 5G speeds up for grabs at fairly reasonable prices after being free for the first month.

Here's what's on offer:

• TPG 5G home Internet, normally $69.99
• Telstra 5G home Internet, normally $85
• Optus 5G home Internet, normally $79
• Vodafone 5G home Internet, normally $75

Don't worry if your home isn't covered by 5G just yet. There are a few 4G home Internet plans boasting the same offer.

• Good to know: The basic 5G Internet plan speeds are comparable to NBN 100 plans. The average price of an NBN 100 plan on Finder is around $90, and $78 for a 5G home wireless plan.

TPG 5G home Internet plan – 1st month free, $69.99 after

Get unlimited data and up to 100Mbps speeds with a TPG 5G home Internet plan.

After the free month, you'll have to pay $69.99 monthly.

With TPG, there's no set-up or modem fee involved. However, if you cancel your home Internet plan before 36 months, you'll need to return your modem within 21 days, in good working condition.

Failing to do so will involve paying $17 multiplied by the months remaining. For example, if you leave after 24 months, you would pay $204 in total ($17 x 12).

Telstra 5G home Internet plan – 1st month free, $85 after

Telstra is offering 1TB (or 1000GB) data and between 50-600Mbps speeds for free for your first month.

It costs $85 a month on your second bill onwards.

You also get 3 months of Binge for free (if you've never subscribed before).

If you decide to cancel your Telstra home Internet plan before 24 months, you can return your modem, at no extra cost, as long as it's within 21 days of you cancelling your plan.

Make sure it's in good working order. Otherwise, you'll need to pay $29 multiplied by the remaining months left. For example, you'd pay $116 if you left after 20 months ($29 x 4 months remaining).

Optus 5G home Internet plan – 1st month free, $79 after

Optus's 5G Internet Everyday plan promises up to 100Mbps speeds, clocking in at 83Mbps during the busy hours of the day (7-11pm).

You get the first month free and will be required to pay $79 monthly after that.

In return, you also get access to Optus Sport and OS Fitness for free, plus a 50Mbps satisfaction guarantee.

If you want faster speeds, you can sign up to Optus's 5G Internet Entertainer plan instead. It's free for the first month and then $89 a month after that.

You will need to stay connected for 36 months to get the modem for free.

If you leave earlier, you have to pay $16 multiplied by the remaining months left. For example, you will need to pay $384 if you leave after 12 months ($16 x 24 months remaining).

Vodafone 5G home Internet plan – 1st month free, $75 after

Get unlimited data and up to 100Mbps speeds free for the first month, then $75 a month after that.

The price goes down to $70 a month if you also have a Vodafone mobile plan.

If you cancel your plan within 36 months, you won't need to pay out the cost of the modem as long as it's returned to Vodafone in good working order within 30 days of cancellation.

Otherwise, you'll need to pay $17 a month for each remaining month.

If you don't want your speeds to get capped, you can sign up to Vodafone's $85 a month plan. Again, if you're an existing mobile customer you get a $5 discount.

4G home Internet also comes with the first month free

If you find 5G isn't available at your property just yet, you could try a 4G home Internet plan for free instead.

All 3 plans listed above come with 20Mbps speed caps. These are comparable to an NBN 25 plan which is good enough for 1-3 people but won't allow you to stream 4K content.
