Waiting in queue at arrival immigration of Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport Bali

Volcanic ash cloud causes major issues at Denpasar airport.

The Mount Agung eruption caused havoc for Aussie travellers today as the subsequent ash cloud lead to flight cancellations and the closure of the Ngurah Rai International Airport.

According to the Bali Airport website, "Flight operations at Bali Denpasar Airport (DPS) are currently suspended due to Agung volcanic ash."

The government has closed the airport "starting from 7:15am local time on Monday 27 November 2017 until 7:00am on Tuesday 28 November 2017," according to an official statement.

With the growing popularity of Bali as a destination for schoolies and the summer holidays just around the corner, the eruption could not have come at a worse time.

The ash cloud comes after two months of seismic activity and speculation as to whether Mount Agung would actually erupt, and now that it has, it doesn't seem likely to stop any time soon.

"The height of the eruption has been steadily increasing, ash is currently observed to a height of 30,000 feet (or 9,144 metres) and a small amount of ash has fallen at Denpasar Airport and across Bali's south east," said a statement from the Australian government's Bureau of Meteorology.

As Mount Agung has now erupted, those looking to take out travel insurance will not have cover for claims relating to this event. Please review the table below to find out the various cut-off dates.
