How many Mbps do I need? And how close to whatever it is do I need to be for wi-fi? And does IPS include all the h/ware, or do I source that separately, and do I need a router as well? I have a laptop (wi-fi). What is a mi-fi?
Ni Maybelle,
The Mbps you need depends on a range of factors, including your internet habits (do you stream lots of movies and play online games?), the size of your household (how many people will be using the connection?) and the number of connected devices (are you using multiple tablets, laptops and smart TVs at the same time?)
For most users, an NBN 50 plan will be plenty fast.
Wi-Fi range depends on your router’s location and frequency band. For best results, try to place it within 20 metres of any connected devices. (In other words, don’t hide it away in a furthest corner of your home, especially if you have a large property.)
Most internet service providers allow you to purchase or rent a router when you sign up to a plan. They will also arrange for an NBN connection box to be installed if you don’t have one already.
A Mi-Fi is a portable mobile hotspot that uses a SIM card to connect to mobile networks like Telstra and Optus. It is not required for the NBN.
why is telstra not shown in deals?
Hi Chris, if you remove the Finder Partner filter, you’ll be able to see plans from providers we’re not live with. Once that’s removed, you’ll see plans from all providers in our database. To make it easier, you can also use the search bar in the filters section to find specific providers. Hope this helps!
Currently, I am on Telstra pre-pay monthly paying around $40 per month. I am living in an apt in the city 4000, paying $65 for internet to another provider who already has internet connection to my apartment block. I will be moving to Forest Lake 4078 in April. Thinking of getting Telstra NBN internet +plus mobile package. Is this possible please.
You can see our overview of Telstra’s broadband plans here. Note that scoring a discount for having the mobile service as well usually requires a longer-term contract commitment and may well required you to switch to a monthly (rather than prepaid) phone plan.
Exactly what NBN options you have at your new apartment will depend on its location – some apartment blocks do lock up deals with a single specific provider, which might limit your options. If not, it’s definitely worth comparing – a bundled deal might not actually be cheaper than sourcing your mobile and Internet separately.
why didnt you guys include tangerine? It has more cheaper options for higher mbps?
