As of March 2021, Telstra has reintroduced data sharing between mobiles on the same account with its Upfront mobile plans. Data sharing was previously only available on Telstra's family plan and data share SIM.

How does Telstra data sharing work?

Sign up to any of Telstra's four Upfront plans and get access to data sharing. Data sharing is often aimed at families, so you can easily pool your data together and have it all managed under the one account.

  • Data is automatically shared between up to 10 separate Upfront plans on the same account
  • Plans are paid automatically at the start of the month, with no billing
  • Choose between 40 and 180GB of data monthly for each plan
  • Get access to 30 minutes of international calls and Telstra Plus rewards

Data sharing cannot be disabled, and all users on the account can access all the data with no restrictions. Once the entire pool has been depleted, all linked accounts will have their download speed capped at 1.5Mbps until the following month.

Is data sharing a good option?

Data sharing can be a nice feature to have, especially for families who want all their mobile accounts in one place. That being said, Telstra's data sharing may not be the most budget-friendly option for your family.

We've broken down the pros and cons of data sharing with Telstra below.

Pros

  • Convenience. Having all your plans on one account means you only have to deal with one bill, and you'll have loads of data in the pool for sharing.
  • Data monitoring. Using the My Telstra app, you'll be able to see how much data each person has used.
  • Endless data. Once the pool runs out, everyone connected will still be able to access data at a reduced maximum download speed of 1.5Mbps.

Cons

  • No data controls. Telstra does not offer a way to limit how much data each member can use, so one person can blow through the whole pool by themselves.
  • Expensive. Mobile broadband plans have relatively low data caps for their price.

Data sharing alternatives

If you're looking for a family-friendly solution that won't cost you too much, consider buying each member a separate prepaid plan. This will let you:

  • Monitor individual usage if they're all under one account
  • Set data limits based on the allowance of each prepaid plan
  • Save money by purchasing plans from value-focused providers

Or, if you're really keen on the data sharing model, you can consider a family mobile plan like ALDImobile's, which provides up to 110GB of data for the family to share but comes with inbuilt controls on who can download how much.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay extra for data sharing?

All of Telstra's Upfront mobile plans come with data sharing automatically included, so technically, it doesn't cost you any extra as a feature.

What happens if you run out of shared data?

When the data in your shared pool has been used up, all members will be restricted to download speeds of 1.5Mbps until the following month.
