What services does Vaya offer?

Vaya has come a long way since it was acquired by Amaysim at the start of 2016. The MVNO has improved its plans and gone on the offensive, launching the country's first mobile plan price match guarantee for its SIM-only plans. As part of its brand promise, the network will price match any comparable SIM plan and offer users a month free.

Vaya runs on the Optus 4G network, and similar to its parent company Amaysim, exclusively offers SIM only month-to-month plans with a varying range of talk, text and data inclusions.

How much does Vaya cost?

Pricing for Vaya's range of SIM-only plans starts at $16 a month and range up to $36 per month. Plans can be purchased on a rolling month by month basis, or in 12 month blocks with payment upfront and a slight discount on a per-month basis as a result. All plans include unlimited standard national calls and texts, with the key differentiator being the amount of included monthly data, which ranges from 1GB at the lowest tier up to 8GB for the top tier SIM-only plan.

Additional data on all plans comes in at $10/GB, which will be automatically charged to your account should you exceed your monthly allowance.

Vaya also offers a range of handsets to purchase, either outright or over 24 months, with varying handset repayment costs depending on the device selected.

What excess charges could I face on these plans?

  • Excess call costs
  • Excess data costs
  • International call costs
  • Early contract cancellation fees

All of Vaya's SIM-only plans, whether chosen on a month by month basis include unlimited standard national calls and texts, but that doesn't mean that every single type of call you make or text you send is included. The key phrase there is "standard", because non-standard call and text types, such as directory assistance, premium call and SMS and voicemail call return will incur additional charges.

Vaya's pricing for excess data usage falls in line with the industry norm of charging a flat $10 fee when you go over quota, which automatically bumps up your quota by 1GB. Go through that GB, and you'll incur a further $10 charge for every time you do.

Select Vaya plans include the ability to add 200 minutes of international calls to 100 countries for $2 more each month on your bill. Outside of that inclusion, international calls are available at variable rates above your monthly spend. You can find Vaya's full international rate sheet here.

While it supports international calling from within Australia, global roaming is explicitly not supported for Vaya customers.

For month to month services there's no specific contract break fee to speak of, although you will have to settle any outstanding charges. For 12 or 24 month contract customers, additional contract break fees may apply.

What extras does Vaya offer?

Playing in the low cost mobile plan market, Vaya doesn't offer a lot in the way of extras to its customers, instead focusing on its price match guarantee to ensure low prices. Its particular value offering is in its price beat guarantee, which promises to match any non-promotional competitor price and give you a month's access for free on application.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Price match guarantee. If you find a cheaper price on a similar 4G SIM-only plan, Vaya will match it and offer you a month free.
  • Optus 4G plus coverage. Vaya offers its services using the Optus 4G plus network.
  • No lock in contract. Vaya's plans are all billed monthly with no lock in contracts, so you can leave whenever you want.

Cons

  • No large data allowances. The largest data allowance is 8GB for phone plans, which may not be enough to suit heavy mobile users.

      Hi Nig,

      Thanks for your question.

Most mobile plan providers allow for number porting. You just have to directly contact your new provider to request this.

For more information on number porting, please refer here.

      Cheers,

      Hi Kai,

      Thanks for your question.

Yes, simply call Vaya or login to your ‘My Account’ online to activate Global roaming. Vaya does require a $200 bond payment from a nominated credit card in order to activate Global Roaming.

      Cheers,
      May

      Hi Niro,

You can order Vaya’s SIM from their web site, but they don’t offer a student discount.
