Vaya review: Our verdict

Vaya started selling mobile plans to Australian customers about 9 years ago, and is now owned by Optus.

Vaya mobile plans are all around filled with value, but especially if you're looking for big data.

Generally, we think Vaya will suit anyone who is after a no-commitment, zero-frills plan. It has:

  • A great range of data limits to choose from.
  • Free standard delivery or choice of express delivery to get your SIM quickly.
  • Full Optus 4G coverage.
  • A $15 referral discount if you get a friend or family member to sign up too.

There's not much in the way of negatives from Vaya. Its only real pain point is:

  • There are no snazzy bonus features included, just your usual national calls, texts and data.

Value for money

Vaya offers monthly mobile plans that range from $14 for 5GB all the way up to $56 for 64GB.

Vaya's $14 for 5GB plan represents one of the best entry-level plans on the market.

That's not to say Vaya's bigger data plans don't also hold their own, with all its plans (other than the Small plan) costing you $1 per GB or cheaper.

  • Good to know: Vaya's plans have an average value of $0.93 per 1GB of data, which is great when compared to the standard benchmark of $1 per 1GB.

Things to watch out for

  • Vaya charges you a $5 "plan switch" fee when you change from your current Vaya plan to a cheaper one.
  • The mobile app isn't very useful – it just redirects you to a mobile browser version of Vaya's account management.

coverage icon

Coverage

Vaya should give you solid reception inside metropolitan areas, and decent coverage in many rural areas.

  • Vaya uses the full Optus 4G mobile network, which covers 98.5% of the Australian population.
  • You'll get exactly the same coverage on a Vaya plan as you would with a plan direct from Optus.
  • You may notice a drop in coverage in some rural and regional areas compared to the full Telstra network that reaches 99.5% of Australians.

customer service icon

Customer service

When you have questions or problems, you can get in touch with Vaya any day of the week through various methods:
  • Phone the Vaya call centre 9am-6pm weekdays or 10am-5:30pm weekends to chat with a service rep.
  • Start a live chat on the Vaya website, 8am-6:45pm weekdays or 10am-5:30pm weekends.
  • Ask a question using Messenger on the Vaya Facebook page.
  • Send an email directly to Vaya customer service or leave a request using the request form on the Vaya website.
  • Keep in mind: There are no Vaya store locations, so you won't be able to get face-to-face customer support.

bonus icon

Bonus features

Vaya likes to keep its plans simple so it only offers one handy extra feature.

💰 Referral discount

If you refer a friend to Vaya, you'll receive a $15 credit to your account when they activate their plan. This isn't much, but it's still worth a month of Vaya's Small mobile plan.

🌏 International call add-on

Got friends or family overseas? You can add an international call pack for $2 each month that comes with 200 minutes for 100 selected countries.

This is available on all of Vaya's plans except its smallest one.

What rivals are giving Vaya a run for its money?

While Vaya is a strong provider offering great value for your money, there are some other equally good providers to check out if you're still unsure:

Another option on the Optus network:

amaysim logo

If bigger data means more to you, amaysim offers better value than Vaya on its bigger data mobile plans.

For better coverage:

Boost logo

If coverage is a concern, consider Boost Mobile. It runs on the full Telstra 4G network, which means you'll get the same coverage as with Telstra itself, but without the premium price tag.

For more features:

optus logo

If Vaya's lack of extra features is a bummer for you, consider Optus. Being a bigger provider, Optus offers access to features such as Optus Sport, data-free streaming of some services, data sharing and more.

What if I want to keep my current phone number?
Vaya makes keeping your current number easy. During the activation process, select "yes" to bring your current mobile number across to Vaya, and it will do the rest. It should take 1-3 business days for your mobile number to transfer across to Vaya.

If your current number is under someone else's name (a parent or partner), it might be trickier. Check our guide on how to transfer ownership of your mobile number.

      Hi Nig,

      Thanks for your question.

Most mobile plan providers allow for number porting. You just have to directly contact your new provider to request this.

You can read more about number porting through our website.

      Hi Kai,

      Thanks for your question.

Yes, simply call Vaya or login to your ‘My Account’ online to activate Global roaming. Vaya does require a $200 bond payment from a nominated credit card in order to activate Global Roaming.

      Cheers,

      Hi Niro,

You can order Vaya’s SIM from their web site, but they don’t offer a student discount.
