If you're going overseas and have a Telstra mobile plan, you can activate international roaming with Telstra to save on roaming costs. International roaming will let you make calls and texts, and use a bit of data while you're overseas without blowing your budget.
All postpaid Telstra customers, excluding those on the Telstra Upfront Mobile Plan, have access to the International Day Pass for $10 per day ($5 in New Zealand). Prepaid international roaming is currently not supported for Telstra mobile plans, but is expected to be announced by mid-2021.
In supported countries, the Day Pass offers:
True to its name, all inclusions expire at the end of the 24 hour period.
Here are the 70 countries where you can use an International Day Pass for roaming as of January 2021. Roaming will be charged on a pay as you go basis in excluded countries, covered in the next section.

Note that cruise ships are always excluded from the day pass, no matter how close to an included country you may be, and will be charged at pay as you go rates.
You can still roam in the majority of countries not included on the International Day Pass, but you will be charged pay as you go rates (PAYG) for calls, texts, and data. PAYG rates are usually quite expensive and will vary from country to country.
Here are the rates for Yemen as an example:
With these rates, you'd pay $3,000 to use 1GB of data in Yemen, so avoid pay as you go roaming unless you want an insanely high bill.
As a Telstra mobile customer, you get free access to the Telstra Air national WiFi network within Australia, but you can also access the Fon network overseas. The Fon network consists of about 23 million hotspots overseas, largely concentrated in Western Europe.
When you're overseas, you can scan for Fon hotspots and sign into them with your Telstra Air credentials. The Fon WiFi app can help you locate hotspots close to you.
Activating and disabling international roaming with Telstra can be done in the same way, either through your online account management or the My Telstra mobile app. Disabling roaming means you won't be able to make calls, send texts, or use data on your Telstra SIM outside of Australia.
