Qantas has the most popular frequent flyer program in Australia, with over 14.7 million members. You can earn points on flights, hotel bookings and partner products, including purchases you make with a Qantas credit card.

You can redeem Qantas Points for all kinds of rewards, including:

• Qantas flights and flights with partner airlines including Qatar Airways, Emirates, Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines.
• Seat upgrades, hire cars, hotels and packages.
• Items from the Qantas Marketplace, like gift cards, electronics, appliances, luggage and more from over 1,200 leading brands.

Higher status members also get extra perks such as access to airport lounges, extra checked baggage allowances and preferred seating.

How do I join the Qantas Frequent Flyer program?

Signing up for Qantas Frequent Flyer membership usually costs a joining fee of $99.50, but Finder has a guide on how you can join for free.

Membership is open to all ages, but those under 18 need a legal guardian's consent. Kids can also join the Joey Club, which comes with perks designed for families.

Once you've completed your application, you'll receive your Frequent Flyer membership number instantly. You'll need to quote this number every time you book a flight or want to collect frequent flyer points, so note this down somewhere secure.

How can I earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points?

Flights

Earn Qantas Points on all eligible Qantas flights, including low-fare flights. The perks of being a Qantas Frequent Flyer goes beyond just Qantas, allowing you to earn Qantas Points on eligible flights with partner airlines. These include:

• How many points can you earn with partner airlines?

  The number of Qantas Points and Status Credits you can earn with partners depends on where you fly, which airline you fly with and the type of fare you select.

  You can also maximise how many points you earn by choosing flexible Economy fares or booking Premium Economy, Business or First Class seats. If you're flying with Jetstar, you can earn points when selecting a Starter Plus, Starter Max or Business Max fare bundle. You can also earn points on all eligible Jetstar New Zealand domestic fares.

Credit cards

You can earn Qantas Points per $1 spent on a credit card and get big bonus points offers when you sign-up for a new card and meet the requirements. For example a card could offer 80,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $3,000 in the first 90 days.There are 2 main ways you can earn points through a frequent flyer credit card:

1. Direct earn Qantas credit cards. These are cards that are co-branded with Qantas and automatically deposit your points into your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. Examples of some providers include NAB, American Express, Westpac and MyCard.
2. Indirect earn credit cards. Indirect cards are those that come with their own independent rewards program. You can usually then transfer your rewards points to the available partnered frequent flyer programs.

If you're going to be a regular Qantas customer, a direct earn credit card could be right for you. If you'd prefer your points to have more flexibility, an indirect card could be a better choice.

Qantas Pay Card

The Qantas Pay Card is a prepaid Mastercard that lets you load up to 10 foreign currencies and Australian dollars that you can pay with globally. It doubles as your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership card and also earns Qantas Points for eligible spending in Australia and overseas.

• How many points can I earn? 1.5 Qantas Points per AUD$1 on eligible spending in a foreign currency and 1 Qantas Point for every AUD$4 you spend on purchases in Australia.
• Where can I use the card? Around the world, where Mastercard is accepted. When you load funds on the card, you can transfer them between Australian dollars and 10 foreign currency wallets. This gives you a way to avoid currency conversion fees in countries including the US, UK, New Zealand and anywhere that accepts Euros.

Cars

Earn more Qantas Points when you fuel up, hire a car or book transfers to and from the airport.

• Fuel: Earn up to 2 Qantas Points per litre you spend fuelling up at BP and 1 point per $1 spent on eligible in-store products. You just have to join up for the BP Rewards program and connect your account to your Frequent Flyer number.
• Car and motorhome rental: Book with Avis or Budget and earn 4 Qantas Points per $1 spent in Australia or 700 Qantas Points per rental when renting overseas. When you rent a motorhome or campervan from Apollo you can earn 1 point per $1 spent during peak seasons and 3 points per $1 spent during off-peak.
• Car and motorhome rental: Book with Avis or Budget and earn Qantas Points on eligible rentals (typically based on the daily base rate and excluding GST and other charges). When you rent a motorhome or campervan from Apollo you can earn up to 2 points per $1 spent on eligible bookings.
• Chauffeured airport transfers: Earn up to 4 Qantas Points per $1 spent with Chauffeur Drive powered by Brunel – you can earn 100 bonus points when you book using the Brunel Worldwide app.
• Uber airport transfers: Simply link your Uber and Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts to earn points on eligible trips to select airports (including 1 point per $1 on Uber Reserve and 1 point per $2 on other Uber trips). You can also claim 200 Qantas Points when you convert 750 Uber Rewards points.

Hotels and holidays

Earn Qantas Points on your accommodation and holiday packages.

• Book with Qantas Hotels and partners: When you book with Qantas Hotels directly you can earn 3 Qantas Points per $1 spent. Earn points at the same rate when you book with direct partners.
• Book Airbnbs through Qantas: Simply select the Airbnb option on the Qantas Hotels site and you'll find all the available listings. You can earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on Airbnb.
• Transfer points from other rewards programs: The earning rate varies between them but members of Choice Privileges, Hilton Honors, IHG Rewards Club, Accor Live Limitless, Marriott Rewards and World of Hyatt rewards programs can all transfer their respective points for Qantas Points.

Shopping

Qantas's Online Mall lets you earn Qantas Points when shopping online for everything from music, books and high-end fashion to homewares and more. Some of the big brands you can earn points with include Apple, David Jones, eBay and Booktopia. Brands sometimes run bonus deals where you can extra points when buying.

You can also Sign up to Qantas Wine to earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 while enjoying award-winning and in-flight premium wines delivered to your door. If you upgrade to the Premium membership, you can earn up to 3 Points on every dollar spent on wine and events.

Utilities

You can earn Qantas Points on your power bill with a Qantas Red Plus or Qantas Red Saver plan from Red Energy.

Exercise and staying active

Reward yourself with points for staying active when you link your Qantas Frequent Flyer number with the free Qantas Wellbeing app.Based on your preferences, you can earn points for meeting challenges (such as step, running, cycling or swimming goals) as well as weekly in-app goals (like cycling 45 minutes to work every day for a week). You can also earn points when you check your BMI using the app.

The app also regularly promotes partner offers that allow you to earn bonus points if you sign up with a partnered gym or buy fresh groceries from a partnered retailer. You can also earn points when you refer a friend to sign up to Qantas Wellbeing.

Business

Earn Qantas Points on business travel and other spending with Qantas Business Rewards.

When you book eligible flights with a Qantas Business Rewards account, you'll earn points once through the account and once through individual Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts.

As you accumulate points in your Business Rewards account, you can redeem them for business rewards (such as flights or upgrades for business trips) or transfer them to individual Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts to treat your employees.

How many Qantas Frequent Flyer points do I need for a free flight?

Qantas calls its reward seats "Classic Flight Rewards" – the points cost is based on the distance travelled and the type of fare. You can also use points to pay for some Jetstar flights.

The cheapest flight rewards start from 9,200 points (5,700 if redeeming for Jetstar) for up to 600 miles.

How else can I spend my Qantas points

Shopping

Whether you're looking for the latest gadgets, beauty and fashion, homewares or travel and luggage, you can use your Qantas Points to redeem from over 3,000 products. You can also use Points Plus Pay if you're short on Points.

Hotels

You can use your Qantas Points to redeem over 500,000 hotels worldwide. Plus, Frequent Flyer customers can also take advantage of exclusive member offers and discounts.

Car rentals

Redeem your Qantas Rewards for car rental vouchers with Avis, Budget, Hertz and Thrifty. Make bookings via the Qantas website or quote your Frequent Flyer number at the time of booking to use your points to redeem the voucher.

Can you use Qantas Frequent Flyer points to upgrade to business class?

Yes, Qantas Frequent Flyers can use their Qantas Points to request an upgrade to business class on flights they've already booked.

There are 2 kinds of upgrades:

Classic Upgrade Rewards. If you want a taste of luxury, use your points for Classic Upgrade Rewards to upgrade to Premium Economy, Business or First Class. You can use the "Classic Upgrade Reward Calculator" on the Qantas website to determine how many points you'll need.

Bid Now Upgrades. Available by invitation only and for selected Qantas flights, you have the option to bid your points (or a combination of cash and points) to upgrade your flight.

Request is the operative word with upgrades. While you can request an upgrade where one is available, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll be approved. This is because there might be just a few seats free and factors such as when you booked, your Qantas Frequent Flyer status and the fare class can all play a role.

The Qantas Points required for an upgrade to business are different between domestic and international fares.

How much are Qantas Points worth?

The value of your Qantas Points depends on the rewards you're redeeming them for. Generally, redeeming your points for flights and travel upgrades will offer better value for your money than spending them on merchandise or gift cards. Flight redemptions are worth 1.5 cents or more per Qantas Point, while shopping redemptions are typically worth 0.5 cents per Qantas Point.

Can you buy extra Qantas Frequent Flyer points?

Yes, if you know what reward you want to redeem but you're a few points short, you have the option of buying Qantas Points.

You can purchase Qantas Points in blocks of 1,000 (up to a maximum of 150,000 points). You can do this 4 times a year.

How do Qantas Frequent Flyer's status credits and status tiers work?

As you earn more points, you'll pick up "Status Credits" which can help you move up the Qantas Frequent Flyer membership levels. It's important to note that Status Credits are different to Qantas Points, so you can't redeem them for any rewards.

The Qantas Frequent Flyer program has 5 membership tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One.

Bronze membership

Bronze membership is the start of your Qantas Frequent Flyer journey. Being a Bronze member entitles you to:

• Earn Qantas points on flights and on other purchases.
• Earn Status Credits on eligible flights.
• Spend points on Classic Flight Rewards and Classic Upgrade Rewards.
• Shop at the Rewards Store.
• Use Points Plus pay to spend points instead of cash on flights, hotels and more.
• Track all bookings via "My account" in the Qantas App.

You'll earn Qantas Points at the standard rates at entry-level Bronze status. You're not required to maintain any number of status credits or take eligible flights per year.

Silver membership

As a Silver member, you'll get the following benefits as well as those available to Bronze members:

• Earn 50% more points on all eligible Qantas flights.
• Priority telephone service.
• Complimentary and preferential seat selection.
• Priority check-in for domestic and international flights.

Gold membership

As a Gold member, you'll get the following benefits, as well as those available to Silver members:

Can you transfer Qantas Frequent Flyer points?

Yes! You can transfer points from airline partners, hotels and supermarket rewards into Qantas Points. You can also transfer Qantas Points to family members.

Transferring credit card points to Qantas Points

Bank program	Points earned
American Express Membership Rewards	Business Ascent and Ascent Premium program cardholders can transfer 2 Membership Rewards points for 1 Qantas Point.
ANZ Business Rewards	Business Rewards members can transfer 2 Reward Points for 1 Qantas Point.
Commonwealth Bank Awards	If you opted in to Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct before 25 August 2023, you can remain enrolled and continue to have your CommBank Awards points automatically transferred to Qantas Points each month at a rate of 1 Qantas Point for every 2.5 Awards points. A $90 annual opt-in fee applies per card.
Suncorp Bank Rewards	Suncorp Platinum members can opt-in and pay an annual service fee of $49 to set up Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct. All future Suncorp reward points will be transferred automatically at a rate of 1.25 Qantas Points per reward point (1 Qantas Point per reward point for Suncorp Business).

Transferring hotel points to Qantas points

Some hotel loyalty programs will let you earn Qantas points directly instead of hotel reward points.

World of Hyatt	1 stay = 1,000 Qantas Points (Australia and New Zealand). 1 stay = 600 Qantas Points (Overseas hotels). 1 Qantas Point = 2.5 World of Hyatt points at participating properties.	A minimum of 5,000 points is required to get started. Additional points are converted in 1,250 increments.

Common Qantas Frequent flyer mistakes to avoid

• Forgetting to quote your Frequent Flyer number. Make sure to quote your Frequent Flyer number at the time of booking (whether its flights, car rentals or accommodation, for example) to collect your points.
• Redeeming your points for the wrong reward. How you should spend your points will depend on your personal preferences, but some rewards redemptions will offer better value for your money than others. It all comes down to how much 1 point is worth. Learn more about how much Qantas Points are worth.
• Letting your points expire. Points expire after 18 months of inactivity. Activity doesn't necessarily mean flying - points earned through your credit card or transfers also count.
• Airline loyalty vs budget fares. To accrue the most frequent flyer points, you'll need to fly nearly always with Qantas or its partners – this might mean paying more than if you were to fly with budget airlines.
• Credit card bonuses. Credit cards that earn points typically offer a sign-up bonus. Spend the required amount during a certain period and you'll be rewarded heavily.
• Bonus promotions. Keep your ears to the ground for bonus transfer promotions. There are times when you can earn more Qantas Points for transferring points from a credit card.

Frequently asked questions

• Do Qantas Frequent Flyer points expire?

  Yes. Your Qantas Points will expire if your account is inactive. Your account is rendered inactive if you don't redeem or earn any points for 18 months.

  That 18-month timeframe resets any time you register activity. To work out when your points expire, check your account history.

  Qantas will send you an email once your account has been dormant for 12 months and another 45 days before your points are due to expire.

  7 easy ways to keep your frequent flyer points from expiring

• Can you recover expired Qantas Points?

  Yes. If you've lost thousands of precious points, there is a way to get all of them back. How do you recover expired Qantas Points? It's called the Qantas Points Challenge.

  To complete the challenge you must:

  • Contact Qantas within 6 months of your points expiring.
  • Earn 2,500 Qantas Points within 3 months. The 2,500 points must come from at least 2 different sources.

  Once that's done, Qantas will reinstate the lost points.

• Does Qantas Frequent Flyer offer family points pooling?

  No. While Qantas allows you to transfer points to family members, it doesn't allow family pooling like Velocity Frequent Flyer and some other programs.

• How can I claim missing Qantas Frequent Flyer points?

  Claiming points is a straightforward process:

  • Log onto your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. Enter your flight details and documentation from the flight (e.g. boarding pass).
  • You must make your claim within 12 months of travel. A claim for points from a Qantas flight can take up to 3 business days to process. Claims for points from partners can take up to 28 business days to process.

  All claims requests successful or otherwise are shown in your activity statement on your online Qantas Frequent Flyer account.
