How the Finder Score helps you find a better broadband plans

We designed the Finder Score to simplify your search for the best NBN and Home Wireless plans. By analysing hundreds of options from over 40 providers, we evaluate pricing, speeds, data allowances and plan features. Each factor is weighted and combined to generate a score out of 10 — helping you quickly spot the most competitive plans on the market. Read the full breakdown.

What is the cheapest unlimited internet plan?

The cheapest unlimited internet plans will often come with slower speeds such as those on NBN 12 and NBN 25 speed tiers.

These likely won't meet the demands of households with 2 or more people who use the internet for work and entertainment.

Instead of focusing solely on the cheapest unlimited internet plan, we've highlighted the best budget-friendly options across all NBN speed tiers, 4G and 5G home wireless, and mobile broadband as of December 2025.

That way, you'll have a range of choices to suit your speed needs.

We used 20GB - 30GB of data per month as an example to show the potential savings. That's based on the ACCC's Internet Activity Report, which found Aussies use an average of 11.7GB per month - 20GB gives a bit of extra buffer.

Is unlimited internet actually unlimited?

Yep, when an internet provider promises unlimited data, that's exactly what you get - no monthly limits.

You might see in the terms and conditions that a 'fair use policy' may apply. However, that's a pretty vague and subjective condition.

Unless you do something extreme, like running a speed test non-stop for 40 hours and using about 35TB of data - as one user did in 2020, which led Aussie Broadband to cancel their connection.

If you use the service in a way that's excessive or impacts others, you might face restrictions.

How do I find the best unlimited internet plan?

When you're looking for the perfect unlimited internet plan for your home, keep three things in mind: price, speed and provider.

Price

How much are you willing to pay each month? Finder research finds Aussies pay around $85 a month on average, though your budget might very well be different. What you actually end up paying will also depend on the speeds you're after. The good news is there's no shortage of sign-up deals floating around.

Speed

It all depends on your household and internet use. The more people and online activities you have, the faster your connection will need to be to keep everything running smoothly.

For example, NBN offers 8 main speed tiers, while home wireless broadband speeds typically cap at around 25Mbps on 4G. However, 5G home wireless broadband is much faster and more comparable to NBN speeds.

Most plans provide speeds between 50 and 100Mbps, but some providers, like Optus and SpinTel, offer faster or even uncapped options.

Mobile broadband speeds depend on your network and location, with 4G usually slower than NBN and 5G delivering much faster speeds.

Provider

It's a good idea to check out different options because not all providers are created equal.

Maybe you're after a provider that's strong on customer service and tech support, or maybe you only care that they actually deliver on promised speeds and offer a good price.

Mark Neilsen's headshot

"I have an unlimited data NBN plan with Aussie Broadband and with 2 kids in the household it makes life easier that we don't have to monitor downloads. Especially with streaming and gaming big at our place, this can use hundreds of gigabytes each month. Having the internet slow down or cut off doing an important download or major binge session would be a disaster, so I'm very happy that we can avoid this."

Journalist

Do I actually need unlimited home internet?

Home wireless and NBN data-capped plans are very rare these days so you'll almost always end up with unlimited home internet, even if your internet usage is limited.

In fact, only 2 out of 43 fixed-line NBN providers on Finder still offer data-capped plans.

Telstra is the only home wireless broadband provider in our database with a data-capped plan, but even that offers a solid 1TB (1000GB) of data.

With unlimited plans being the norm, they're no longer premium, and you can easily find budget-friendly options.

The caveat here is mobile broadband plans often come with data caps. If your data needs are low or you need portable internet while traveling, it might be a suitable option to consider.

How much data does the average household use?
According to the ACCC's 2024 Internet Activity Report, NBN services averaged around 514GB of data downloaded per month, while home wireless broadband averaged about 452GB.

      Hi Rebecca,
It depends on a provider as to how quickly you could get internet set up. If there is no NBN connection and you wanted a home internet connection without having to wait for the NBN to be installed (a wait for an NBN technician could take between 1-4 weeks depending on availability), you could consider whether a 4G or 5G home internet connection would work for you. This could have you online quicker if you’re in a provider’s coverage area. You can read more in our guides:
      https://www.finder.com.au/broadband-plans/4g-home-internet
      https://www.finder.com.au/broadband-plans/5g-home-internet-plans
Most providers offer a modem included with plans if you don’t have your own, so just check with the provider when signing up to make sure this is an option.
      Hope this helps.

      Hi Val,

      Thanks for your question.

Generally, if the internet provider is available in your area, you can avail of the unlimited plan. However, it is best to compare the options on our comparison table by viewing their details, such as data, fees, and plan information. Once you have made your choice, click “Go to site” to be redirected to their official site. Then you can further confirm if the unlimited data is available in your area along with other inquiries you might have.

      I hope this helps.

      Cheers,

      Anne
