Vodafone’s new unlimited home 4G Internet plan is cheaper than the NBN

Sign up and get your first month free.

Vodafone has launched a new 4G Home Internet plan with unlimited data.

You can get the first month free if you sign up by 15 January 2022. The discount won't appear on checkout, but will be included in your first bill.

How is this plan different and how much will it cost?

Previously, Vodafone's 4G Home Internet plans would come with 200GB and 400GB data limits and cost between $55-$65 per month. These have now been scrapped.

Instead, its new plan comes with unlimited data at a discounted $50 per month if you're an existing Vodafone mobile customer.

Otherwise, you'll need to pay $60 monthly to get in on the deal, which is still cheaper than its NBN 25 plan (more on that below).

You don't need to worry about professional installation. It's as easy as plugging in your modem to get online.

Is there a catch with Vodafone's latest Home Internet plan?

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when it comes to speed and modem cost.

Your speeds will be capped at 20Mbps throughout. This may vary depending on factors such as network congestion and signal strength.

These speeds are comparable to an NBN 25 plan where the maximum you can get is 25Mbps, which is fast enough for a 1-2 person household.

You will need to stay connected for 24 months to avoid paying any modem costs.

If you do decide to exit early, you will need to pay off the remaining balance on your modem. This will be $7.50 per month times the remaining months left.

  • Good to know: If you're unhappy with Vodafone's 4G Home Internet within your first 30 days, you can cancel your plan and return the modem free of charge. It needs to be returned in good working condition within 10 days.

This means you can truly give Vodafone's new offer a test run for free.

How does it compare to an NBN plan?

Being capped at 20Mbps, Vodafone's Home Internet plan is closest to its NBN 25 plan.

Speed-wise, Vodafone's NBN 25 plan wins as it comes with the maximum of 25Mbps speeds during the busy hours of the day (7-11pm).

That being said, its 4G Home Internet plan costs less than its NBN plan.

Price without discount:

  • 4G Home Internet: $60 per month
  • NBN 25: $75 per month

Price with discount for existing customers:

  • 4G Home Internet: $50 per month
  • NBN 25: $60 per month

The bottom line

We reckon Vodafone's new plan is definitely an affordable and easy Internet option.

However, speed and signal strength could be an issue and you could find better speeds for comparable prices with other NBN providers.

For example, the cheapest NBN 25 plan on Finder from provider Flip costs $44 per month for unlimited data and 23Mbps speeds.

That's a cheaper price than Vodafone, and slightly faster speeds than its Home Internet plan too.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference. But if you're curious enough, you could take advantage of Vodafone's first month free offer to see if its new 4G Home Internet plan is worth it or not.
