What is GigaComm?

Australians haven't had the easiest run with their internet connection despite the NBN completing its formal rollout across the country in late 2020.

That's because broadband infrastructure varies between properties and locations and not everyone has access to all the technology mixes available. That's where internet provider GigaComm comes in with its value proposition.

GigaComm is an independent internet service provider offering households an alternative to the NBN.

It uses the latest fibre and fixed wireless technologies gigabit internet with speeds of up to 1000Mbps. This covers areas where speeds tend to be limited to 100Mbps.

GigaComm review: Our verdict

GigaComm seems to be addressing Australia's internet woes after it was ranked 67th in the world (from 182 countries) for fixed broadband in August 2022.

The Ookla Speedtest Global Index reported a median download speed of 52.62Mbps for Australia. In comparison, Singapore topped the list with 219.01Mbps.

GigaComm promises households speeds of anywhere between 200Mbps and 1000Mbps as long as it can connect to the property.

It could be right for you if you want the following:

  • Ultra-fast speeds and an alternative to the NBN, especially if you're an avid gamer.
  • Residential guarantee where you're refunded your money within the first month of service if you're unhappy with it (including installation fee and on 24-month contracts as well).

While GigaComm has a lot going for it, keep in mind:

  • It's still a new service and availability is limited.
  • You might need to pay for a new high-tech modem to get gigabit speeds if your current hardware is outdated.

Where is GigaComm available?

While GigaComm sounds great on paper, its availability is limited to areas in Sydney and Melbourne. However, it plans to expand to other major Australian cities.

You can check out the maps to see if it's servicing your home or simply plug in your address on GigaComm's own website to find out.

Value for money

GigaComm offers some good value plans if you consider the speeds you get in return.

Prices start at $79 a month for 200Mbps and go up to $169 a month for 1000Mbps.

To help you compare, the average cost of NBN plans on Finder for speeds of 100–1000Mbps are:

NBN 100$92.35
NBN 250$112.90
NBN 1000$145.41

Keeping the NBN prices in mind, GigaComm's $79 plan stands out. Only homes with FTTP or HFC connection types can access the NBN 250 and NBN 1000 too.

Things to watch out for:

  • There's an installation fee for houses unless you lock yourself into a 12-month or 24-month contract. However, GigaComm's residential guarantee allows you to take its service for a 30-day test run and leave if you're unhappy.
  • If you don't have a compatible modem, you'll need to buy a new one from GigaComm for $125. Your current hardware may be unable to support gigabit speeds so you'll need to verify before signing up.

Performance

GigaComm is a new service and not part of the NBN, which is why it's not included in the ACCC broadband performance report. We use this report as a reference for deducing the top internet providers in Australia.

However, reviews on Trustpilot and Product Review seem to credit its fast speeds. Keep in mind there are just a handful of reviews but we'll keep you updated if we learn more about its speeds.

Which rivals are giving GigaComm a run for its money?

As a non-NBN service, it's hard to compare GigaComm to other providers. However, there are some NBN brands that offer great customer service, fast speeds and bonus features to win you over.

For fast speeds:
