How much should I be spending on broadband?
The average cost of broadband as per our Consumer Sentiment Tracker is between $76 and $94 a month for NBN (depending on the speed), about $77 a month for home wireless broadband and $67 a month for mobile broadband. Which connection type works best for you?
Fixed-line NBN is the standard in Australia, but if you have strong mobile coverage where you live, home wireless could be a viable alternative for similar speeds. Especially if you're unhappy with your NBN connection. It runs on the same mobile networks as your phone, offers similar speeds, doesn’t need a technician to install, and can sometimes be cheaper depending on the provider. If you're after internet on the go or only need the basics, a mobile broadband plan could be a handy and flexible option.
How much data do you need?
These days, there’s no point considering a data-capped broadband plan unless you’re going with mobile broadband. The majority of NBN and home wireless internet plans come with unlimited data for roughly the same price - and with more choice. You’ll also have peace of mind instead of stressing about hitting your data cap too early in the month.
Which internet speed should you get?
The NBN offers 8 different speed tiers. The faster the speed, the higher the cost, so pick based on how many people are using the connection and what for. With home wireless and mobile broadband, you'll typically pick between 4G or 5G depending on your budget and how strong the mobile signal is in your area.
Can you bring your own modem?
With NBN plans, many providers let you bring your own modem to save on upfront costs, as long as it’s compatible. Home wireless doesn’t support BYO. You’ll need to use the modem supplied by the provider, which is often free or available for a small rental fee if returned later. Mobile broadband doesn’t require a modem, you'll need to insert the SIM in like a dongle, tablet or hotspot.
