Streaming a video means that you watch it online, with the help of an in-browser or in-application plugin or program that is able to play the content immediately. The media should be received by the plugin and played in a continuous ‘stream’, hence the name.

Streaming is fast, cost effective, and (providing all the hardware and software are in place) user-friendly.

What are streaming services?

Video-on-demand or streaming services hit the Australian market in a big way in 2015. Remember when we had the choice of one Pay TV company or nothing? Australian can now pick and choose, and it’s the services that are fighting it out for your business.

How can I save money by streaming?

One of the best things about streaming is the money you save on purchasing or renting box sets and movies on DVD, especially when you may only watch one film or TV series once or twice. With a subscription service you pay a monthly fee in return for unlimited access to the content library.

It means you can watch more, have more choice of titles and pay less.

The catch is: if you're paying per GB for your data, you could be saving money with one hand and spending it with the other. If you’re not getting a good deal on your internet, or if you are getting charged for every KB you download, that episode could be costing you more than you think.

Adam Internet is one of the few Australian ISPs that offer access to some sites off-quota. That means that any data you access through these sites (including streaming video) comes for free and won’t count towards your data allowance.

It’s called unmetered data and Adam internet offers it for iView, TED talks, radio and news, as well as some gaming and music sites.

It also offers unmetered Netflix content.

Get Netflix quota-free with Adam

Adam Internet offers unmetered Netflix content on fixed line broadband and NBN plans. Unmetered content is not available on mobile internet plans.

To take advantage of unmetered Netflix content you will need to have an active Australian Netflix subscription and be connected to the internet with an Adam Internet fixed-line plan (contract or month-to-month). Access your Netflix account to watch as normal. You won’t be charged for the data, and it will not count towards your monthly usage.

N.B. The offer is only available to Australian Netflix content, so all of you cheeky VPN users will still have to pay for your data.

Most video-on-demand subscriptions support most mobile devices. Double check that your phone or tablet is supported. The following devices are supported:

  • Apple iPhone 6S
  • HTC One M9
  • Samsung Galaxy S6
  • Apple iPhone 5
  • Google Nexus 5
  • Sony Xperia Z3 compact
  • Motorola Moto G
  • Nokia Lumia 930
  • Sony Xperia Z4 tablet
  • Apple iPad Air 2
  • Lenovo Yoga tablet 2
  • Amazon Fire HD 6
  • ASUS Transformer Book T200
