Telstra finally ditches stingy fees on its new NBN plans
And they'll only cost you $1 for the first month.
While Telstra has kept its plans contract-free since 2018, the terms and conditions have always included paying off the cost of the modem if you were to leave before 24 months.
This may not have been a contract term, but it's still considered strings attached.
Fortunately, its latest range of Upfront NBN plans is throwing that out the door. All you need to do is return the modem back to Telstra if you switch providers.
Here's what's on offer:
- NBN 25: $80 a month
- NBN 50: $1 for the first month, then $95 a month
- NBN 100: $1 for the first month, then $110 a month
- NBN 250: $1 for the first month, then $140 a month
You have until 10 January to make the most of its $1 offer.
- Keep in mind: If you don't return the modem, you'll be charged a $200 non-return fee.
How are Telstra's Upfront NBN plans different?
While the actual prices of the Upfront plans aren't any different to Telstra's regular line-up, the removal of the modem fee means Telstra's Upfront plans are now truly contract-free.
"We listened to our customers who said they didn't want ad hoc usage charges or bills that were hard to understand," said a Telstra spokesperson.
"These plans have been designed to simplify inclusions and allow flexibility to move between plans, as well as ensuring convenience and no surprises with automatic payments."
According to the Telstra spokesperson, the new Upfront NBN plans:
- Are quicker and easier to sign up for and connect. The order process takes only a few minutes, with full NBN connection within a few days.
- Come with the new inclusion of 30 minutes of international calling on your home phone line (on top of unlimited standard national and mobile calls).
You'll also get the whole suite of Telstra features and perks, such as:
- Maximum available speeds on all its speed tiers. For example, its NBN 50 plan promises the full 50Mbps speeds during the busy hours of the day (7–11pm).
- 4G backup on Telstra's modem in case there's an NBN outage.
- Free express modem delivery.
- Option to join Telstra Plus to earn points towards rewards.
- 3 months subscription to BINGE.
Will these replace Telstra's usual NBN plans?
Yes, they will. The timelines aren't clear just yet but it's what Telstra did with its mobile plans. Its range of NBN products will follow suit.
Telstra also says it will start offering an Upfront NBN 1000 plan sometime next year.
