Vodafone runs its own rapidly expanding mobile network across Australia, providing services on both postpaid contract and prepaid terms.
What services does Vodafone Mobile offer?
Vodafone runs its own 3G and 4G network across Australia which it uses for the provision of services to its customers as well as a providing coverage for a number of Mobile Virtual Network operators (MVNOS).
On its own network it provides plans that bundle handsets over a 24 month period, as well as contract SIM-only plans on month-to-month, 12 or 24 month terms. If you’re happy with the handset you’ve already got, Vodafone has a wide array of prepaid plans. It offers combo prepaid plans with 28 day expiry periods and a variety of inclusions, as well as longer expiry Pay As You Go Plus plans. Finally, its MyMix plans allow you to finely tune a plan to your specific needs, so you can include or leave out call, text or data components.
How much does Vodafone Mobile cost?
At a contract level, Vodafone plans range from $40 per month up to $130 per month with differing data inclusions. All contract plans include unlimited standard national calls and texts as part of the inclusion, but if you opt for a phone as part of a 24 month plan, that may incur additional handset recharges depending on your plan tier and phone type.
In the prepaid space, Vodafone’s Combo Prepaid deals range from $30-$50 outright, with recharges then ranging from $10-$60. All Combo prepaid plans include unlimited standard national calls and texts, but lower level recharges drop the expiry down to as little as 7 days.
Vodafone’s Pay As You Go Plus plans range in price from $30-$50 for a starter pack and $10 to $50 per recharge. All packs, recharge or starter have 365 days expiry, with calls charged at 20c/minute. Texts are charged at 20c each, and data is priced at 2c per MB.
Vodafone’s MyMix Plan pricing has a wide degree of variance depending on the plan inclusions you pick, with a total range of as little as $8 up to $110. Expiry can range from 7 days up to 90 days within those recharges depending on your selection. MyMix plans offer either a flat 120 minutes of calls or unlimited standard national calling inclusions. All MyMix recharges come with unlimited standard text messages.
What extras do Vodafone plans offer?
Vodafone plans offer a choice of bundled extras for customers on 24 month contracts. These are labelled slightly differently depending on your choice of international calling minutes (Red Global), additional data usage (Red Data) or entertainment services (Red Play).
Red Global plans come with a pre-allocated quota of international calling minutes to select locations, scaled up depending on plan tiers. Red Data plans, as the name suggests, give additional data above the standard inclusions, and Red Play plans offer a variety of subscription offerings to popular media, streaming video and music services.
If you’re a member of Qantas’ Frequent Flyer scheme, you can score additional frequent flyer points when you sign up to a plan worth $80 or more per month, not including handset costs.
You can opt for a six month subscription to Spotify, Stan or the Sydney Morning Herald online with your contract worth $80 or more. At the $100+ tier, you get a full 12 month subscription to one of those services with your plan.
However, it's a question of choices, because the bonus Qantas points offer doesn't apply for Play deals; it's one or the other. Equally, if you want the International calling minutes but need additional data, you can also pay fixed sums for data boosts that work out cheaper than the standard $10/GB excess data charges.
Vodafone’s contract plans are eligible for its $5/day roaming deal. This adds a flat $5/day fee to your mobile bill while travelling internationally, but that’s all you’ll pay to access whatever your usual contract plan inclusions are while travelling per day. For prepaid customers on the Combo plan, a variety of prepaid add-ons are available on 3 or 7 day terms.
Most Vodafone plans, both prepaid and contract, include international calling inclusions, with some plans offering a mix of countries that get unlimited calls while others enjoy a set quantity of calling minutes. As such, depending on where you want or need to call frequently they could be a very good match for your needs.
