Are Telstra’s iPad Pro plans good value?

Alex Kidman 18 November 2015

Does it make sense to sign up on contract for Apple’s biggest tablet?

Telstra already sells a range of tablets on contract plans with bundled data, so the iPad Pro is only the latest in a long line of devices in that context.

Telstra will only put the 128GB iPad Pro model on contract at this time with consumer plans starting at $85 per month on a 24 month contract. The standalone 128GB iPad Pro sells in Australia for $1699 in the 128GB Wi-Fi+Cellular variety. Telstra will offer all three colour variants -- silver, space grey and gold -- of the iPad Pro on contract.

The key factor here is ensuring that the contract makes sense from a pure costs point of view. You obviously get the benefit of spreading the outright cost out over two years with a contract, but it will mostly only make sense if you’re going to use the bundled data with the iPad Pro as well, so that’s what we’ll compare it against the same inclusions on the Telstra network:

Here is how the iPad Pro 128GB Wi-Fi+Cellular compares against outright purchase with the same amount of data on a Telstra SIM-only tablet data plan:

Apple iPad Pro from Apple

The iPad Pro touts a huge 12.9-inch Retina display, almost twice the CPU performance of iPad Air 2 and improved Multi-Touch. Combine this with the Apple Pencil and you get a designer's best friend.

As long as you are likely to use the bundled data, there’s some solid discounts to be had with an iPad Pro contract bundle.

Telstra has also announced that it will also sell the iPad Pro Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil accessories through Telstra stores.

There’s no specific discount on those accessories relative to Apple's standard price. However as Apple at the time of writing is currently having some stock issues with iPad Pro accessories, it may be worthwhile checking if Telstra has stock to sell if you’re already an iPad Pro owner.
