Optus plans could cost you an extra $192 a year, or more if you also decide to sign up for an Optus Sport subscription after 1 August.

Optus has followed big brother Telstra in hiking up its mobile plan prices across most of its postpaid plans as of 18 July.

Its revamped plans will now include more data, but given Optus Sport and OS Fitness won't be included from August, Optus' value could drop a couple of points for sports enthusiasts.

How much will Optus mobile plans cost now?

All of the prices listed for Optus' new mobile plans are now $4 a month more expensive and come with additional data.

The exception is the Optus Family Plan. It'll cost you an extra $16 a month but also comes with more data.

Here's the full breakdown of new Optus prices:

  • Small Optus Choice Plus. $49 a month for 30GB
  • Medium Optus Choice Plus. $59 a month for 100GB
  • Large Optus Choice Plus. $69 a month for 220GB
  • Extra Large Optus Choice Plus. $89 a month for 360GB
  • Optus Plus Promo Plan. $69 a month for the first 12 months, then $119 ongoing
  • Optus Plus Family. $165 a month for 320GB

This means you're looking at paying an additional $48 a year, or $192 if you sign up to the family plan.

Telstra raised mobile plan prices on 1 July by up to $4. Read about it here.

This is the second price hike from Optus in 2 years

An additional $48 per year might not seem like a lot at first glance. However, Optus already jacked up its prices in 2021 by $6 a month across 4 plans.

Here's a look at the price increases over the last 2 years.

PlanPrior to May 20212021 price and dataLatest price and data
Small Optus Choice Plus$39/month for 10GB$45/month for 20GB$49/month for 30GB
Medium Optus Choice Plus$49/month for 60GB$55/month for 80GB$59/month for 100GB
Large Optus Choice Plus$59/month for 100GB$65/month for 200GB$69/month for 220GB
Extra Large Optus Choice Plus$79/month for 120GB$85/month for 240GB$49/month for 30GB

The price rises could be justified if you want more data.

However, it may not work for those trying to stick to a budget and don't need additional data.

How much will Optus Sport cost?

One of Optus' biggest selling points has been its inclusion of Optus Sport on its postpaid plans.

From 1 August, that's going to change. Eligible Optus customers will have to pay an extra $6.99 to access Optus Sport (and OS Fitness).

For everyone else, the monthly price will be $24.99 per month.

Is Optus still worth it?

Optus still has big brand energy that will likely keep drawing in crowds.

For some people, its mobile plans could still be worth it if they want:

  • Big chunks of data.
  • Cheaper access to Optus Sport and OS Fitness.
  • Potential 5G coverage.
  • Access to Optus SubHub, which will allow you to manage eligible subscriptions and get bundling discounts.

If all that matters to you is price and a small amount of data, you're probably better off going with another provider.
