What policies are available from Medibank Pet Insurance?

Medibank Pet Insurance offers several policy options to meet the needs of a range of different pet owners. The policies available are:

Essential Pet Care

The Essential Pet Care policy is the most basic level of cover offered by Medibank. It covers both injuries and illnesses but does have some exclusions. Here are some of the features:

  • $4,000 annual benefit limit
  • Up to 70% back on eligible expenses
  • $300 a year for consultations and vet visits
  • Choose an excess of $0 or $100
  • 30-day waiting period for illnesses

Ultimate Pet Care

The Ultimate Pet Care policy provides top-level cover with a higher annual benefit limit and a higher percentage of costs covered. You can also add on optional routine care cover. The main features of this policy are:

  • $15,000 annual benefit limit
  • Up to 80% of costs covered
  • $300 a year for consultations and vet visits
  • Choose an excess of $0, $100 or $200
  • 30-day waiting period for illnesses
  • Optional routine care cover for things like vaccinations, flea treatments and desexing

Emergency Pet Care

The Emergency Pet Care policy sits in between the other two policies, offering an increased annual benefit limit but only covering specific high-cost vet expenses. It is an excellent way to get cover for the most expensive vet bills, without paying for an all-inclusive policy. The main features of this policy are:

  • $8,000 annual benefit limit
  • Up to 80% of costs covered
  • No sub-limit on consultations and vet visits
  • Choose an excess of $0, $100 or $200
  • 30-day waiting period for illnesses

Who is Medibank Pet Insurance underwritten by?

Medibank Pet Insurance policies are underwritten by the Hollard Insurance Company. However, the policies are administered by ProSure, which is an associate of Hollard. Both Hollard and ProSure are based in Chatswood, New South Wales.

Why should I choose Medibank Pet Insurance?

Consider the following pros and cons before taking out a Medibank Pet Insurance policy:

Pros
  • Discount for Medibank Private members. Medibank Private members receive a 10% discount on their policy.
  • No sub-limit on vet consultations. If you choose the Emergency Pet Care policy, you can claim your entire annual benefit limit on vet consultations if necessary. Most policies and providers cap this at $300.
  • Hereditary diseases are covered. As long as no clinical signs of hereditary disease or congenital defects are showing when you take out the policy, they will be covered.
  • Multi-pet discount. Get a further 5% off policies for additional pets.
Cons
  • Excess. Each of the policies has an excess, where some providers will offer excess-free pet insurance.
  • Inflexible routine care option. You can only claim $50 on two specific procedures under the routine care benefit. The rest of the benefit limit is fixed for urine and blood testing.
  • Waiting period. Each of the policies has a 30-day waiting period for illnesses and a six-month waiting period for cruciate ligament injuries.
  • Low annual benefit limits. Both the Essential and the Ultimate Pet Care policies have comparatively low annual benefit limits, which may not be suitable if you anticipate high expenses.

How do I apply for Medibank Pet Insurance?

You can get a quote and apply online. Alternatively, you can apply over the phone.

You should compare the policies and choose which level of cover is right for you. You should also check the product disclosure statement for a full list of exclusions and benefit conditions.

Your pet must be eight weeks old before you can take out a health insurance policy.

How do I make a claim with Medibank Pet Insurance?

Making a claim with Medibank Pet Insurance is straightforward and can be done either online or by post. You must make your claim within 90 days of receiving treatment.

First, you will need to complete the claims form and include original receipts, invoices and consultation notes from your vet. If you are making your first claim, you will also need to submit your pet’s full medical record.

Once you have the documents together, submit them either online or by post. Medibank Pet Insurance may need to contact your vet before approving your claim.

Can I cancel my policy if I’m not happy with it?

You can cancel your Medibank Pet Insurance policy at any time. All policies have a 21-day cooling-off period, which means you can cancel within this period and receive a full refund for any premiums you have paid.

After the 21-day cooling-off period, you will be refunded for whatever time is remaining on your policy. For example, if your policy has six months remaining when you cancel you will receive half of the annual premium amount back.

However, if you have already made a claim you cannot receive any premiums back if you cancel your policy.

What kind of exclusions are there?

Like all insurance products, Medibank Pet Insurance policies have a number of exclusions. You should read the product disclosure statement to ensure that you fully understand what is and isn’t covered by your policy. Here are the more common things that are not covered:

  • Pregnancy and breeding
  • Elective surgery
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Dental procedures
  • Routine care (except under the routine care benefit)
  • Ambulance fees
  • Prescription food or vitamins
  • Pre-existing conditions
