Ford Ranger: Specs and pricing
Here's a quick introduction to Ford's HiLux-rivalling ute. The current platform (T6) has been with us since 2011. Since its launch, there have been a few facelifts. The current-generation Ranger was designed and engineered from the ground up by Ford Australia.
You can buy the Ranger in several different drivetrain and body style combinations. Ford sells a single, super and double cab. Buyers can also choose between cab-chassis variants or pick-up trays as well as three engines. There's a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, a big five-pot, 3.2-litre turbo donk and a more recent 2.0-litre. Despite being a smaller engine, the 2.0-litre has the most power and torque in addition to boasting the lowest fuel consumption. There's also the choice of low-riding and high-riding models, plus 2WD or 4WD derivatives.
For models with the 2.2- or 3.2-litre diesel, you can choose either a six-speed manual or automatic. On the 2.0-litre, there's a ten-speed auto cog shifter.
Ford Ranger XL
The entry-point to the Ranger stable starts from a drive-away cost of $32,385. This ute is markedly kitted out for a workhorse spec ute. You get a 4.2-inch multi-information display, Bluetooth phone/audio streaming, two USB ports, Ford's SYNC3, single-zone climate control, power windows, vinyl floor coverings, power-adjustable mirrors, a body colour bumper, 16-inch steel wheels and a competitive amount of safety assists, including the following:
- Auto high beam
- Cruise control
- Dynamic stability control (DSC)
- Emergency assistance
- Hill launch assist
- Lane keeping aid
- Load adaptive control
- Pre-collision assist (AEB with pedestrian detection)
- Rear-view camera: Accessory fitted at the dealer
- Remote keyless fob
- Rollover mitigation
- Traction control system
- Traffic sign recognition
- Trailer sway control
4x2 Hi-Riders share the same spec but also get an electronically locking rear diff. You'll pay $38,256 for the Hi-Rider cab-chassis Ranger XL with 2WD.
Double-cabs get two more woofer speakers to make a total of six, as opposed to four. There's also a 230V inverter in the rear centre console, power windows in the back, a central high-mounted brake light and parking sensors.
You can get XL Rangers with the 2.2-litre or 3.2-litre Ford diesel engines.
Ford Ranger XLT
One of the most noticeable additions on the XLT trim is an 8-inch, colour touchscreen. You also receive Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, DAB+, sat-nav with traffic info, voice-activated controls, a chilled centre console, twin 4.2-inch instrument displays, carpet floor coverings as well as a leather-clad steering wheel and gear shifter. Other upgrades include chrome exterior trim pieces, heated wing mirrors, privacy glass, a chrome sports bar, a tow bar and larger 17-inch alloy wheels.
Safety fitments comprise of (in addition to or replacing the XL safety equipment) the following:
- Rain-sensing wipers
- Auto-dimming rear-view mirror (instead of a manual one)
- Adaptive cruise control with forward collision

The most you'll pay for an XLT Ranger is around $65,437 for a 4x4 dual-cab with a 2.0-litre diesel.
Ford Ranger XLS
If the XLS were an XLT variant, it would be priced below the 4x4 double cabs. This is a 4x4, dual cab body-only model. Ford only drops the 3.2-litre turbo diesel in this Ranger. Drive-away prices start from $54,252.
The spec is very similar to the XLT, only you get single-zone manual climate control by default, with a dual-zone automatic system included in an optional pack. The rear-view mirror is manually operated, you don't get leather interior trim pieces, chrome exterior pieces are switched for black ones (chrome handles and grille are part of an optional pack), the alloys are 16-inch, there's no tow bar, smart-entry or a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Ford Ranger Wildtrak
This is the crème de la crème of the "standard" Rangers (more on that below). Prices start from $66,642 for 3.2-litre, rising to $70,527 for the 2.0-litre.
For the extra money, you get a schmick ute. Highlights include the following:
- Wildtrak floor mats
- LED fog lamps
- Bolder grey exterior trim pieces
- Puddle lamps on exterior mirrors
- A sailplane sports bar
- Side steps
- 18-inch alloys
- Tow bar
- Powered load bay roller shutter
- Central locking tailgate
- Wildtrak leather seats
- Heated front seats
- Power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support
Another nice-to-have is ambient, multi-colour lighting.
Ford Ranger Raptor
Based on the Ford Ranger, this is Ford's super-ute. It's like you took an ordinary Ranger and gave it to the A-Team who were then trapped in a cave with a full complement of tools and a stack of metal. Ford engineers seriously beefed up the Raptor. You'll pay from $85,575 driveway for the performance Ranger.
It's pretty unique, with other ute makers attempting their own versions that are toned down a little in comparison to the Raptor. For the money, you get the following:
- 33-inch BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres (285/70)
- 17-inch black alloys
- Fox 2.5-inch shocks with position sensitive damping
- Chassis mounted front bumper in Dyno Grey
- Unique Raptor grille
- Heavy-duty side-steps

- Raptor design rear bumper
- Front and rear rated recovery hooks
- Reinforced chassis
- Tow bar
- More aggressive off-road angles and higher ride height
- 850mm wading depth as opposed to 800mm
- 8-inch colour touchscreen
- 4.2-inch multi-function display

Basically, this thing is like a road-legal Dakar truck without the racing stickers. It's available only with Ford's 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel and ten-speed auto box.
