Ford Ranger: Specs and pricing

Here's a quick introduction to Ford's HiLux-rivalling ute. The current platform (T6) has been with us since 2011. Since its launch, there have been a few facelifts. The current-generation Ranger was designed and engineered from the ground up by Ford Australia.

You can buy the Ranger in several different drivetrain and body style combinations. Ford sells a single, super and double cab. Buyers can also choose between cab-chassis variants or pick-up trays as well as three engines. There's a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, a big five-pot, 3.2-litre turbo donk and a more recent 2.0-litre. Despite being a smaller engine, the 2.0-litre has the most power and torque in addition to boasting the lowest fuel consumption. There's also the choice of low-riding and high-riding models, plus 2WD or 4WD derivatives.

For models with the 2.2- or 3.2-litre diesel, you can choose either a six-speed manual or automatic. On the 2.0-litre, there's a ten-speed auto cog shifter.

Ford Ranger XL Lo Rider single-cab chassis model with tray

Ford Ranger XL

The entry-point to the Ranger stable starts from a drive-away cost of $33,779. This ute is markedly kitted out for a workhorse spec ute. You get a 4.2-inch multi-information display, Bluetooth phone/audio streaming, two USB ports, Ford's SYNC3, single-zone climate control, power windows, vinyl floor coverings, power-adjustable mirrors, a body colour bumper, 16-inch steel wheels and a competitive amount of safety assists, including the following:

  • Auto high beam
  • Cruise control
  • Dynamic stability control (DSC)
  • Emergency assistance
  • Hill launch assist
  • Lane keeping aid
  • Load adaptive control
  • Pre-collision assist (AEB with pedestrian detection)
  • Rear-view camera: Accessory fitted at the dealer
  • Remote keyless fob
  • Rollover mitigation
  • Traction control system
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Trailer sway control

A Hi-rider XL Ranger single-cab

4x2 Hi-Riders share the same spec but also get an electronically locking rear diff. You'll pay $39,650 for the Hi-Rider cab-chassis Ranger XL with 2WD.

Double-cabs get two more woofer speakers to make a total of six, as opposed to four. There's also a 230V inverter in the rear centre console, power windows in the back, a central high-mounted brake light and parking sensors.

You can get XL Rangers with the 2.2-litre or 3.2-litre Ford diesel engines.

Ford Ranger XLT Super cab model

Ford Ranger XLT

This model, as a double cab pick-up starts from $57,263.

One of the most noticeable additions on the XLT trim is an 8-inch, colour touchscreen. You also receive Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, DAB+, sat-nav with traffic info, voice-activated controls, a chilled centre console, twin 4.2-inch instrument displays, carpet floor coverings as well as a leather-clad steering wheel and gear shifter. Other upgrades include chrome exterior trim pieces, heated wing mirrors, privacy glass, a chrome sports bar, a tow bar and larger 17-inch alloy wheels.

Safety fitments comprise of (in addition to or replacing the XL safety equipment) the following:

  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Auto-dimming rear-view mirror (instead of a manual one)
  • Adaptive cruise control with forward collision
  • Perimetric, inclination and interior movement alarms
  • Driver impairment monitor
  • Ford MyKey
  • Front parking assists
  • Semi-auto active park assist
  • Smart keyless entry with push-button ignition
  • Tyre pressure monitor system
  • LED DRLs and headlamps

Going for the XLT, you unlock the option of also purchasing the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel power plant.

Ford Ranger XLT dual-cab

The most you'll pay for an XLT Ranger is around $66,945 for a 4x4 dual-cab with a 2.0-litre diesel.

Ford Ranger XLS double cab

Ford Ranger XLS

If the XLS were an XLT variant, it would be priced below the 4x4 double cabs. This is a 4x4, dual cab body-only model. Ford only drops the 3.2-litre turbo diesel in this Ranger. Drive-away prices start from $55,718.

The spec is very similar to the XLT, only you get single-zone manual climate control by default, with a dual-zone automatic system included in an optional pack. The rear-view mirror is manually operated, you don't get leather interior trim pieces, chrome exterior pieces are switched for black ones (chrome handles and grille are part of an optional pack), the alloys are 16-inch, there's no tow bar, smart-entry or a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Ford Ranger Wildtrak double cab 4x4

Ford Ranger Wildtrak

This is the crème de la crème of the "standard" Rangers (more on that below). Prices start from $68,181 for 3.2-litre, rising to $71,992 for the 2.0-litre.

For the extra money, you get a schmick ute. Highlights include the following:

  • Wildtrak floor mats
  • LED fog lamps
  • Bolder grey exterior trim pieces
  • Puddle lamps on exterior mirrors
  • A sailplane sports bar
  • Side steps
  • 18-inch alloys
  • Tow bar
  • Powered load bay roller shutter
  • Central locking tailgate
  • Wildtrak leather seats
  • Heated front seats
  • Power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support

Another nice-to-have is ambient, multi-colour lighting.

Ford Ranger Raptor performance ute

Ford Ranger Raptor X

Based on the Ford Ranger, this is Ford's super-ute. It's like you took an ordinary Ranger and gave it to the A-Team who were then trapped in a cave with a welder and a stack of metal. Ford engineers seriously beefed up the Raptor X. You'll pay from $85,691 driveway for the performance Ranger.

It's pretty unique, with other ute makers attempting their own versions that are toned down a little in comparison to the Raptor. For the money, you get the following:

  • 33-inch BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres (285/70)
  • 17-inch black alloys
  • Fox 2.5-inch shocks with position sensitive damping
  • Chassis mounted front bumper in Dyno Grey
  • Unique Raptor grille
  • Heavy-duty side-steps
  • Heavy-duty front bash plate and underbody shielding
  • High performance LED headlamps
  • Raptor design rear bumper
  • Front and rear rated recovery hooks
  • Reinforced chassis
  • Tow bar
  • More aggressive off-road angles and higher ride height
  • 850mm wading depth as opposed to 800mm
  • 8-inch colour touchscreen
  • 4.2-inch multi-function display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity
  • Sat-nav and traffic updates
  • SYNC3 with voice control
  • 2 x USB ports
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Leather-wrapped sports steering wheel (with contrast stitching), gear-shifter and handbrake gaiter
  • Smart keyless entry and push-button start
  • Unique Raptor matting all round
  • Dyno Grey exterior trim pieces

Basically, this thing is like a road-legal Dakar truck without the racing stickers. It's available only with Ford's 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel and ten-speed auto box.

Want to know more about the Ford Ranger?

Read our detailed Ford Ranger comparison review, where we combined the findings of five motoring experts. Reading that will save you a lot of time. Our team has also driven the 2019 Ranger and the Raptor. If you're looking at a used Ford Ranger, we also have a 2017 MY comparison review.

Why the Ford Ranger?

What reasons can we give you to help you narrow down your ute selection?

    • The Ford Ranger is very well reviewed.
    • It's supposed to be great off-road.
    • Value-wise it's also pretty good, not the cheapest, but with a solid level of equipment.
    • It looks chunky and mean.
    • That 2.0-litre engine is rather frugal, while packing a powerful punch.
    • It's a competent alternative to the HiLux.
    • It's popular.
    • It's reportedly well constructed.

What to look for in a Ford Ranger loan

If you could design a perfect car loan, it would have the following features:

  • A low-interest rate
  • No application fees
  • No monthly fee
  • Affordable monthly repayments
  • Payment flexibility, for example, if you wanted to pay back extra one month

The more of the above that is true about a prospective loan, the closer you are to finding a competitive car loan.

How to compare car loans for the Ford Ranger

Many drivers will be buying the ute as a business or commercial vehicle. If that's the case for you, check our business car loan comparison guide.

If you're a private buyer, the next thing you need to think about is the types of finance on offer.

We help you compare secured and unsecured car loans. With a secured loan, the lender registers an interest in the vehicle. Consequently, if you fail to meet your repayments agreement, they'll legally be in a position to recover it. A secured car loan typically has the benefit of a lower rate of interest because of the security held against the loan.

Another factor to take into consideration, lenders often require the funds of a secured car loan be spent purely on the car purchase. If you need to borrow a bit more to cover things like insurance or other on-road costs, look at an unsecured car loan. These loans won't have as keen an interest rate, so you'll pay a little more over the loan term. However, there are fewer conditions attached to how you use the money.

Don't forget to weigh in application fees, early repayment charges and other costs. Those can quickly add-up!

What other Ford Ranger finance options are there?

As well as a secured car loan, you could finance a Ford Ranger using:

  • An unsecured car loan - This type of personal loan gives you the freedom to spend the borrowed money on other purchases unrelated to the Ford Ranger.
  • A novated lease - Ideal for employees, this type of finance may have tax benefits
  • A chattel mortgage - Ideal for Ford Ranger business buyers
  • Dealer finance - Dealer finance provided by your Ford dealer. This type of Ford Ranger finance often carries attractive interest rates, but maybe packaged with balloon/residual payments.

How to use the above car finance comparison tool

To see examples of Ford Ranger loans, enter the total you need to borrow and select the term in years. The longer the borrowing period, the lower the payments should be month to month. That can help make a Ranger match your budget. To do a quick mental calculation, the difference is more or less in line with the years of the loan, so a three-year loan will be roughly twice the monthly repayment of a seven-year agreement. Don't forget, the longer you take out a loan, the more you'll have to repay in interest.
