Once the speed test is finished, take note of your download and upload speeds.
- Download speed is how quickly you receive data from the internet. A low download speed translates to a slow internet experience.
- Upload speed is how quickly you send data to the internet. It's not as important as download speeds, unless you upload large files regularly.
With these figures in mind, let's dive into whether your results mean you're getting a good internet speeds with Optus or not.
What internet speeds should you expect from Optus?
Depending on what Optus internet plan you have, you can expect different benchmarks for what makes a good internet speed.

What do these internet speeds from Optus mean?
Optus offers typical evening speeds that reach or come close to the maximum allowed on each plan.
In theory, this means you should be getting the speeds advertised on your plan, no matter when you run your speed test.
If it turns out the results you're getting are a lot lower than the typical evening speed of your plan, you might have cause for concern.
For example, if your speed test result shows 90Mbps on an Optus NBN 100 plan, that’s generally fine - it’s slightly below the typical evening speed, but not enough to cause concern. If you’re seeing speeds around 75Mbps, though, it might be worth checking what’s causing the slowdown.
One thing to keep in mind with home wireless broadband plans is that speeds can vary more because they rely on mobile networks, which can be affected by factors like signal strength, network congestion and weather conditions.
What if I'm not getting the advertised speeds from Optus?
There could be a few reasons for this including:
- Distance to your modem: The farther away your modem is and the more obstacles in the way, the weaker your Wi-Fi signal. This may result in you experiencing slower speeds on an Optus plan.
- Distance from the node: If you're on a Fibre to the Node (FTTN) NBN connection, the speed you get is heavily dependent on how far away that node is.
- Hardware issues. An outdated or damaged modem can significantly impact connection speed and make it seem as though your plan isn't giving you the speeds it's promised.
- Low bandwidth. Your internet speed might be too slow for what you’re doing online, or too many people in your household are using the connection at once.
- Too many devices. Like the previous point, having too many devices connected at once can use up your bandwidth and cause Wi-Fi interference, slowing down your connection.
- A problem from Optus's end. If none of the above applies or you need more guidance, contact Optus support for help.
