1. That starts by comparing your energy plans
You want to make sure you're getting the best price for electricity. The end of the year is the best time to review your plan and make a switch.
In some states, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive plans is $200–$300 per year.

2. Keep your thermostat at a cool 25 degrees
It might be tempting to blast your air conditioner at 18 degrees when it's scorching hot outside.
However, every degree can add 10% to your running costs.
A general rule of thumb is to keep your thermostat at 25 degrees to avoid blowing up your energy bill.

3. Invest in a decent fan
Buying a powerful fan can help you sleep through the night without running the aircon for 7 or 8 hours straight.
It can make even the sunnier days more bearable by providing good ventilation.
I bought a very good $39 Kmart pedestal fan and a summer duvet. I'll admit it's a bit noisy but after a couple of nights, you won't even notice. Before sleeping, I keep the fan running and set my aircon timer to switch off after an hour. This works like a charm.
4. Hack your home and switch to energy-efficient appliances
Heating and cooling can make up 40% of your energy bill.
Reverse-cycle air conditioners are the most cost-effective. The better their energy star rating, the lower your bills will be.
Just make sure it's the right size. For example, a 2.5kW system may not be ideal for a big lounge or massive bedroom.
