Which dog is the world’s favourite? The map above shows which dog breed each country searches for on Google more than any other. In Australia it’s the French bulldog, a feeling shared only by the UK and Thailand. Overall, the most popular dog seems to be the Rottweiler, being the most searched-for in 65 of the 161 places included in the research. This number might be influenced by the breed's feisty reputation, or by its usefulness as a guard dog. Either way, the Rottweiler is clearly on a lot of people's minds worldwide! Explore our findings in the interactive map above, or filter for a specific breed or country below.

methodology

The search volumes for each of the over 400 dogs (not extinct) listed on Wikipedia's list of dog breeds were checked for each country using keywordtool.io. The 161 countries included in this article are the ones for which keywordtool.io returned enough data to show a clear preference for a breed. For 19 of the countries, there were two dog breeds sharing the top spot, so in these cases the tie was settled using Google Trends.

In some cases, what appeared to be a country’s most popular breed was actually highly searched due to sharing a company or brand name of something else in that country. In these situations we combined Google Trends for a deeper search analysis, where it can specify for dog breed.
