Velocity’s Million Points Giveaway for frequent flyers explained

Here's what you need to do to be in the running to become a points millionaire.

Australians will soon be able to enjoy domestic and international travel once again, but for 2 people that travel is set to be heavily discounted.

Velocity Frequent Flyer and Flybuys have launched a promotion offering a whopping 1.5 million Velocity Points prize, along with a stack of other points giveaways.

"We're excited to get Australians back in the air and bringing back the joy of travel, and this competition gives Velocity members the opportunity to increase their Points balance by up to a million points, ready to use when the skies re-open," said a Virgin Australia Group spokesperson.

How do you enter the million points giveaway?

To enter the competition Velocity members need to:

  1. Join Flybuys or link an existing Flybuys account to their Velocity account.
  2. Transfer 1,000 Flybuys Points to their Velocity account. Each 1,000 point transfer counts as 1 entry into the draw.

If you turn on Auto Transfer you'll receive 3 entries per transfer.

How many points are on offer?

One lucky person will win 1 million Velocity Points and another 1 million Flybuys Points. That adds up to 1.5 million Velocity Points if you convert the Flybuys, which is always the best-value way of using them.

"Converting Flybuys to Velocity Points and spending those on flights gives you at least twice as much value as using those Flybuys elsewhere," said Finder editor-at-large and frequent flyer guru Angus Kidman. "With Virgin relaunching international flights, there will be more ways to redeem them too."

There are also 50 prizes of 10,000 Velocity Points and 50 prizes of 10,000 Flybuys Points up for grabs.

What can you do with 1 million Velocity Points?

If you win 1 million Velocity Points, what does that actually look like?

The minimum points needed for a redemption flight is just 15,600 Velocity Points for a trip from Sydney to Melbourne return. 1 million points would let you make that journey an incredible 64 times.

Velocity reward flights are calculated in miles so longer flights cost more points. 1 million Velocity Points in flights also translate to:

  • 28 return economy flights from Sydney to Nadi, Fiji OR
  • 28 return economy flights from Brisbane to Perth OR
  • 28 return economy flights from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand OR
  • 7 return business flights from Brisbane to Honolulu, Hawaii

See where else you could travel at Virgin Australia's website.

What can you do with 10,000 Velocity Frequent Flyer points?

10,000 Velocity Points are a lot less flashy, but realistically you've got better odds of being one of the people to win this prize.

10,000 Velocity Points spent on flights looks like:

  • 1 economy one-way flight from Sydney to Melbourne OR
  • 1 economy one-way flight from Hobart to Melbourne OR
  • 1 economy one-way flight from Sydney to Ballina OR
  • 1 economy one-way flight from Melbourne to Adelaide

"Don't waste your points spending them in the Flybuys rewards store," Kidman warned. "Flights offer much more bang for your buck."

Is there a catch?

Unlike previous Flybuys to Velocity 15% transfer promotions, there are no bonus points on offer here unless you win.

The standard transfer rate is 2,000 Flybuys points for 1,000 Velocity Points. Those 2,000 Flybuys points are worth $10 off your next Coles shop but you can get a lot more value from them if you convert them to Velocity Points and redeem them for flights.

This promotion means you're in with a chance to earn up to 1 million points. That means it's worth transferring your Flybuys points now if you've been hoarding them.

If you're looking for more opportunities to win 1 million Velocity Points, don't forget to get your jab and enter Virgin Australia's VA-X and Win competition.

      Hi Robyn,
You can stop your points from Flybuys being transferred to Velocity by logging into your Flybuys account and clicking “Turn Auto Transfer off”.
      Hope that helps,
