Virgin Australia double points offer: What to check

Bonus Velocity Points on offer for eight routes, but look at the fine print.

So right now Virgin has an unusual offer where you can score double the number of Velocity Points for bookings on a handful of routes.

You have to book before 1 March 2020 and take the flights by 31 May 2020, so there's not a huge window of opportunity.

These are the routes where the offer applies. Outside of Melbourne-Denpasar, they're all domestic connections:

  • Melbourne-Denpasar
  • Perth-Kalgoorlie
  • Sydney-Uluru/Ayers Rock
  • Sydney-Townsville
  • Melbourne-Hobart
  • Brisbane-Cairns
  • Brisbane-Sydney
  • Adelaide-Melbourne

If that's tempting, you need to opt in and activate the offer before making your bookings.

The deal also only applies to direct flights. For the majority of the city pairs on the list, there aren't any non-direct alternatives, but that condition would mean you couldn't earn the extra points flying from Sydney to Townsville via Brisbane, or Melbourne to Denpasar via Brisbane.

The number of Velocity Points you earn for domestic bookings is based on ticket price. Usually you'll get 5 Velocity Points per $1 spent; with the offer in place, that goes up to 10 Velocity Points.

It's probably not worth booking a trip purely for those points. But if you know you need to book on one of those routes during the next couple of months, it's worth taking advantage.
