Car loans 101
Look for these five things in a new car loan:
- A low interest rate car loan (the lower the number, the better)
- Minimal or zero application fees
- Low or no monthly/annual charges
- Repayments that fit your budget
- Ability to pay back more as desired
Make sure you factor in all of the above when comparing car loans. The more of the above criteria a loan meets, in theory, the better value it will be.
How to compare car loans for the Mitsubishi Triton
There are a handful of different flavours of vehicle finance.
In this section, we're concentrating on secured and unsecured car loans.
Secured car loans
Taking two identical car loans, one unsecured and one secured car loan, the latter will have a lower interest rate. The reason for this is the loan company logs a security interest in the vehicle you purchase with the Personal Property Security Register (PPSR). When it does this, it gives it the ability to recover your vehicle should you default on payments. As a result, the loan provider can drop interest rates.
There are downsides, of course:
- Many loan providers place restrictions on the age and type of vehicle you can buy.
- The loan will probably carry limitations on how you can spend the money. Usually, it's restricted to the car purchase only.
Unsecured car loan
Unsecured car loans have fewer limitations on how you can use the borrowed funds. For example, you could borrow a little extra to pay for car mods or on-road costs. You will pay more back across the lifetime of the loan though, as these products generally have a raised interest rate.
You're paying a higher rate of interest because no collateral is offered against the loan. There's a slightly higher perceived level of risk for the lender. Also, moneylenders generally tend to have more stringent application criteria and may place a cap on the maximum amount they'll loan you.
It's very important that when you're calculating your budget, you make sure to include things like the application and monthly charges, as well as interest. This helps reveal the actual cost of a car loan.
How to compare car loans with Finder
Our car loan comparison tool is super simple to use. Just enter the amount you need to borrow and the length of time you need the funds over. Then click the calculate button.
Finding the monthly repayments unaffordable? You could pick a longer loan term. This will spread out the cost, reducing payments significantly. However, you'll spend more in interest. As a general rule, a three-year car loan for $30,000 currently works out to roughly $900 monthly. Double the repayment period and your monthly figures drop to nearer $500 (as of December 2019).
Car loans can be confusing. Our complete guide to car loans will help you understand everything you need to know, including application requirements and all the associated jargon.
