Coles Flybuys triple points: How to make the most of this hot deal

Thousands of store-brand items earn points, so what's the catch?

Want some extra points? Coles is offering triple Flybuys points on its store-brand goods.

The deal runs until 28 June, and covers "thousands of Coles brand products", according to the supermarket's announcement.

That includes packaged meat and prepacked vegetables and fruit (those with a fixed price), but not loose fruit and vegetables (sold by weight) or deli items.

Bottom line? If it has a Coles logo on it, it will earn 3 Flybuys points per $1 spent, rather than the usual 1 point. But if it's from a name brand, you'll just earn at the regular rate.

As always, I recommend converting your Flybuys points into Virgin Velocity points to get the most value out of them. A free flight offers better value than a $10 grocery voucher.

How many Flybuys points can you earn?

Let's be clear – this is a good way to top up your Velocity balance, but it probably won't get you a free flight on its own.

The typical grocery spend for an Australian household is $155 per week, according to Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker.

Assume you manage to spend $80 of that (a little over half) on Coles-branded items.

Over 4 weekly shops, you'd earn a total of 630 Velocity Points while the bonus offer is running. (If it wasn't running, you'd get just 310 Velocity Points from the same shop.)

Every point helps, but I wouldn't totally reset my shopping patterns for this deal.

What this offer does present is a useful opportunity to try out some Coles-branded products you might have skipped in the past.

Decades of experience as a professional cheapskate have taught me that store-brand goods need to be assessed on an item-by-item basis.

Coles tinned tomatoes? Absolutely. Coles basic laundry liquid? Absolutely not.

While this deal is running, I'll try out a couple of other Coles-branded items.

If they're good, they might replace the current brand-name versions I buy.

And if not, at least I got a little more out of the experiment.
