Members of Virgin Australia's Velocity Frequent Flyer program can earn points on Optus plans. Optus is a Velocity partner, but as of mid-2020 isn't offering any direct options for earning Velocity points. However, there are deals that let you earn flybuys points, which can then be converted to Velocity Points. Here's what's on offer and what to consider.

How can you earn flybuys points with Optus?

You can earn up to 60,000 flybuys points if you sign up for or re-contract onto one of a number of eligible Optus plans. So, if you're looking for a new phone, you can grab a few more points.

While the plans themselves are month-to-month have no cancellation fees, you do have to stay connected for at least 3 months (or 89 days) in order for you to be credited the points. If you jump ship earlier than that, you'll be out of luck and out of points.

If you do sign up to a plan with a handset and want to cancel, you'll have to pay out the remaining value of the phone. You'll also have to pay for any other charges incurred before cancelling.

Optus' current flybuys bonus deals run until 26 July 2020. After that date, the bonus points will disappear, and we wouldn't be surprised if the main offer also changes.

How many flybuys points will I earn with Optus?

The number of flybuys you're able to bank from this offer depends on the plan that you select. Optus's base-level eligible voice and data plan will set you back $39 per month and will net you 9,000 flybuys points. On the other end of the spectrum, the most points you can earn on a single voice and data plan during this offer is 60,000 points. For that, you'll need to get on the "Optus One" Optus Choice month-to-month plan (which costs $119 per month).

The table below shows the different plans, including the standard number of flybuys points you'll earn after 3 months and the 50% bonus "Bonanza" points Optus is offering until late July 2020. We've also shown how many Velocity Points those would convert to, assuming a standard conversion rate of 870 Velocity Points for each 2,000 flybuys points. If you wait for a bonus offer for flybuys conversion, which usually rolls around at least twice a year, that figure would be higher.

To earn the points, you have to sign up through a specific link on the Velocity or Optus sites and include your Velocity Frequent Flyer number. You can't add your number into a plan after signing up.

How else can I earn Velocity Points?

Signing up for a phone plan isn't the only way you can score more Velocity Points, of course. Signing up for a Velocity credit card can score you bonus points as well as points on your everyday spending. Check out our full guide on other ways to earn Velocity Points.

Remember, buying something just for points is rarely worthwhile. Before you make a decision, compare other mobile plans to see if any are better suited to your needs.
