Hyundai i30: Specs and pricing

Hyundai's i30 is in a pretty rare corner of the hatchback market, in that there's a model for everyone. The everyday i30 Go is well-priced and even has some frills, while the i30 Premium and N Line Premium are luxurious hatch models. Then, for those who really want something that gets the pulse racing, there's the i30 N hot hatch. It's a range that's unmatched in versatility by close rivals Toyota and Mazda.

There are seven trims on sale in Australia, from the i30 Go, which has a drive-away cost of just $20,990, right up to the all-out i30 N performance model for $44,588.30.

Hyundai i30 engine options

Engine and transmissions

Buyers can choose an i30 with one of four engines. There's a 2.0-litre, four-pot petrol, a 1.6-litre turbo, four-banger diesel or a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol. Finally, for the i30N, Hyundai bolted on a twin scrolling turbo to a 2.0-litre petrol.

Transmission wise, you can go for a six-speed manual, six-speed auto with sequential manual or a seven-speed dry, dual-clutch auto. Something that's pretty fun, the hot hatch gets an old-school six-speed manual.

Here's a brief rundown of the Hyundai i30 Australia range.

How to compare car loans for the Hyundai i30

There are several ways to finance a car purchase. In this section, we're mainly focussing on secured and unsecured car loans.

Secured car loans

Secured car loans generally have lower interest rates than unsecured ones. That's because lenders can register an interest in your car, using it as security against the loan. That means, if you stop paying for your loan, they can recover the vehicle. That's how they manage to offer more enticing car loan interest rates. However, there is a downside. You can't use the borrowed money on anything else other than the car purchase, ruling out paying for on-road costs and unrelated miscellaneous items.

Unsecured car loan

Need to use some of the money you're borrowing for other purchases, unrelated to your car purchase? Not totally happy with your car having a registered security interest placed over it? Then an unsecured car loan might be the better option for you. With these loans, you have more freedom to spend the funds on what you'd like, including the car.

The downside is that you'll pay higher rates of interest. That's because there's an increased perceived level of risk for lenders. That means overall, when looking at two comparable loans, a secured and an unsecured one, the secured car loan will cost you less over time (in interest).

You must factor in all costs to get the true final total of your car loan, and you'll need to include things like the application/processing fee, monthly charges and interest.

Using our car loan comparison tool

Our car loan comparison tool is designed to be super easy and quick to use. All you need to do is find out how much the model you're looking to purchase retails for, enter the figure into the "Loan Amount" box and select the period or term you'd like to borrow the money for. Hit the orange calculate button and you're done, now you just need to select a loan that fits your budget.

If you find the loans seem a little out of your league, try extending the loan term. The longer you take to repay, the less each monthly payment will be. This does come at the expense of having to pay interest back over a longer period, meaning you'll be charged more. However, it can make a big difference to monthly outgoings. Repaying $30,000 over 6 years could cost around $500 per month, while the monthly payment over a term of 3 years is almost double.

Don't worry if you're finding car loans confusing. We've published a simple, easy-to-understand car loans guide.
