Qantas Points Club set for launch
Get extra rewards for points you earn from credit cards and supermarket shopping.
UPDATE: Turns out the launch Qantas held was for Qantas Car Insurance, not Points Club. We'll keep you posted when it finally happens!
It looks like Qantas's long-promised Points Club is about to land.
Qantas has scheduled a media event for "an exciting new way for Qantas Frequent Flyers to earn Qantas Points on everyday spend" for Tuesday 29 October 2019.
It seems likely that this refers to Points Club, the scheme which Qantas announced in June as part of a major overhaul of Qantas Frequent Flyer. At the time, Qantas said Points Club would be launching in "late 2019".
Points Club is designed to reward what Qantas labels "frequent buyers" – "members who earn lots of points through non-flying related transactions". That could include rewards credit cards, points transferred through Woolworths Rewards and Qantas Wine.
People in this category often accumulate a large stash of points, but can find spending them on reward flights challenging, since the best reward seats are made available first to higher-tier Platinum and Gold members.
We already know that Points Club will allow non-fliers to earn lounge access passes and additional Status Credits, which are the key to moving to higher Qantas Frequent Flyer tiers.
The entry tier will require earning 150,000 Qantas Points in a single year. That's not necessarily a massive challenge if you've scored 100,000 Qantas Points through a credit card sign-up. There will also be a higher Points Club Plus Tier, but we don't know the earning requirement for that yet. It's also not clear if existing Gold and Platinum members will score additional benefits if they qualify for Points Club.
Points Finder will be at the launch, so stay tuned for full details on all the developments as they occur.
