What are the risks of payday loans?

  • Unaffordable repayments. Payday loans are an expensive way to borrow money and should only be used as a last resort. Check the size of each repayment and ensure you will be able to pay it on time. Unaffordable repayments can lead to late fees that will only make things worse.
  • High rates and fees. Rates and fees on payday loans are high but there are rules in place so be sure to check your lender is not charging you more than ASIC allows. Also, look at what you would be charged if you are late on a payment or if you default on the loan altogether.
  • Unreputable lenders. All Australian lenders should be accredited by ASIC. Check for a credit licence on the ASIC Register and ensure that the lender is easily contactable.
  • Impact on credit score. Every loan application shows up on credit reports. While lenders might not consider credit history, applying for lots of loans within a short period can have a negative impact on your credit score in the future.

Prospective payday loan applicants should always compare their options carefully prior to submitting any loan application. They should also remember that while payday loans may seem convenient, they can be debt traps to people who are facing financial difficulties, and should not be taken out by anyone who is unsure as to whether or not they can comfortably meet the necessary repayments.

      Hi Will,

Generally, in order to be approved for a loan, you need to provide evidence that you can make repayments, usually in the form of income. Other criteria apply also, including your current level of debt, employment status and personal situation (such as number of children/dependents). All of these factors can impact your ability to be approved for a loan.

You can learn more about applying for a loan when your credit score is on the lower side here:

      Best of luck!

      Hi Paula,

You have a number of loan options depending on how much you need to borrow. Since you have a very good credit score, you can apply for personal loan and compare available lenders on the page.

You can also apply from the short term lenders listed on this page and try to use the personal loan calculator so you don’t apply for loans out of your budget range.

Before applying, please ensure that you meet all the eligibility criteria and read through the details of the needed requirements as well as the relevant Product Disclosure Statements/Terms and Conditions when comparing your options before making a decision on whether it is right for you.

      Thanks for your question,
      Elizabeth

      Hi Paula,

A low credit score can prevent you from being eligible for a credit card. However you may want to look into getting a personal loan. You may compare the loan options available to pensioners where lenders are more flexible with their credit score eligibility.

You may also refer to credit card options for applicants with bad credit to know some information on your credit rating.

Before applying, please ensure that you meet all the eligibility criteria and read through the details of the needed requirements as well as the relevant Product Disclosure Statements/Terms and Conditions when comparing your options before making a decision on whether it is right for you.

      Thanks,

      Elizabeth

      ElizabethJune 15, 2015Finder

      Hi Luke,

      Thanks for your question.

Most of these lenders operate online, so you’re able to submit your application at any time. However, check the operating hours of the lender you apply with to see when your application will be processed and loan sent out to you (pending approval).

      Thanks,

      Elizabeth
