Medibank is offering members a new way to save on health insurance

The Live Better app to reward members who have a healthy lifestyle.

Medibank will be rewarding Australians who live a healthy lifestyle with a way to lower their hospital or extras premiums from mid-2019 with the launch of the Medibank Live Better app.

The app, which will soon be available to 4,000 Medibank employees before it's offered to Medibank's 2.8 million customers later this year, allows users to earn Live Better points. Customers accrue these points and can use them towards the payment of their private health insurance premiums. Members can also reduce their hospital excess or increase their extras limits.

Members can either log their progress directly in the Live Better app or sync their smartwatch or wearable device. And it's not just physical health that's being rewarded, as Medibank is taking a holistic approach.

"Live Better takes a holistic approach under the pillars of 'eat, move, feel'. We believe this is what sets Live Better apart. We recognise improving health and wellbeing is more than running up a hill – it could be walking with a friend, meditation, swapping a sugary drink for water or getting an early night. Taking small steps can improve your quality of life," Medibank chief customer officer David Koczkar said in a statement.

Medibank plans on contacting roughly 400,000 of its Priority program customers with an offer of 10,000 Live Better points for downloading the Live Better app.

Medibank is not the only health fund in Australia offering discounts to users for maintaining a healthier lifestyle. myOwn health insurance launched in 2017 and offers its members a 5% discount on their health insurance premiums for hitting health-related goals. Qantas Insurance has a similar offer, rewarding those that live a healthy lifestyle with Qantas Points.
