Neglected your extras health insurance? Here’s how you could claim $500 back before 2021
Time is running out to make the most of your extras - but with a little effort, it's definitely possible.
It's been easier than ever to put healthcare on the backburner this year but if you haven't had the chance to take advantage of your extras benefits, don't give up just yet.
While most extras policies will reset limits at the start of the calendar year, there may still be time to claim more than $500 back before then. Here's an example of how you could do it:
Get those new glasses
Most extras policies offer a couple of hundred dollars back on prescription glasses or sunnies. For example, CUA's Total Extras policy lets you claim $250 back every year.
The best bit? Insurers usually pay 100% of the bill up until you reach your limit. That means you won't have to contribute any cash as long as you stay within budget, which is pretty easy to do.
Sign up to a gym or exercise course
Lots of extras policies offer money back for health improvement - including exercise classes and even gym memberships.
For example, ahm's Lifestyle Extras policy offers $250 back if you have a letter from your doctor which shows you have a BMI over 26 or another genuine medical reason to visit the gym.
Head to your gym and pay for your membership in advance and that automatically makes your membership $250 cheaper than it would have been.
Go for a dental check-up
Okay, it's not the most fun Christmas activity but it is an easy way to get value from your policy.
According to HealthEngine, the average cost of a standard dental check up in the Sydney region is $70 while that figure jumps to $165 in the CBD.
If your extras policy is one which offers no-gap dental - like HCF's Top Extras, you can get a trip to the dentist for free.
That's not all
Following those three health steps could mean you get to claim a further $500 from your policy before the year is out - but there are lots of other ways to save money too.
If you've got some spare time and are keen to leverage your remaining limits, take a closer look at your personal account and see what's still on offer to you. Some more examples may be:
- Treat yourself to a massage
- Try a therapy or counselling session
- Book a consultation with a dietitian
- Get a prescription for non-BPS contraceptives
Some of these may or may not be available to you, but we bet you can still squeeze a couple hundred dollars more from your health fund if you give it your best shot.
