Where are the shares I buy held? For Australian shares is IG a CHESS provider?
And then what about International shares?
    Thanks

      Hi Briandd,

      Thank you for your inquiry.

IG Share Trading operates on a direct custody model. Australian shares purchased are held on your behalf by their broker Citicorp Nominees PTY LTD., while UK and US shares are registered under Citibank N.A.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Jonathan

      Hi George,

Following up on my answer to you, IG offer Orders to opens or Stops and Limits which allow you to do a similar thing to Conditional orders. If this is what you’re after, there are no additional fees for this. However these are only available on CFDs and not share trading.

      Regards,

      Hi Alex,

      Thanks for your question.

There is no minimum amount of shares to transfer into your account. Please note, if you’re looking to transfer that amount, it may take between 5-7 weeks. IG also allow you to transfer in bunches.

Can you tell me what the bank account arrangements are with IG Share Trading. Some providers explain that you will open a trading account with them and that you must also open a parallel bank account with XYZ Bank (which might be the same as the share trading company or maybe not). This would be useful information to include on your description. e.g. (“when you open a trading account with IG, you will need to deposit your funds in an account at …”)

    • Staff
      ShirleySeptember 19, 2016Staff

      Hi Mark,

      A great question!

When you open a trading account with IG, you will need to deposits your funds via credit card, debit card or BPAY. You don’t need to open a specific bank account, you can use your current one as long as it was BPAY or a debit card attached.

Using BPAY is the only free option as it stands – it takes about 2 days to process.

Your BPAY Biller and Customer Reference number is available from the following locations:
      - The email IG sent when your account was activated
      - The web-based trading platform via Payments
      - Your daily statement that is sent whenever there is activity on your account

Hope this helps and we’ll add the information on the page soon!

Q1. Saw Shirley response…”When you open a trading account with IG, you will need to deposits your funds via….” followed by “Using BPAY is the only free option as it stands – it takes about 2 days to process.” I read somewhere that payment via debit card (Mastercard) is free also. Please confirm.

Q2. If I have Australian shares bought through another broker, and want to sell through IG, I would have to first transfer these shares to IG? I understand there are no fees from IG, but would there (generally) be fees from the other broker? and how long would it take for the transfer?

    • Staff
      AnndyMay 8, 2017Staff

      Hi Dean,

Thanks for your questions and for bringing this to our attention.

Upon checking with IG website, aside from BPAY, you may also deposit your funds for free using Visa and MasterCard debit cards.

In regards to broker’s fee, it may vary. There are brokers that charge $0 while others may charge a fee.

      Cheers,
      Anndy

I have an IG trade account and a huge huge disadvantage not mentioned above is the inability to place orders when a market is closed. Obviously the orders can’t be filled while the market is closed, but I am finding that i cannot even place the order until pre-market or open.

      Hi Pejy

Thanks for your question. IG have a two year inactivity limit, where an account will be closed if there’s no funds in the account.

IG also offer delayed data on most shares and there is a small fee for live prices, with a rebate available. If you are using their website, this data, news and analysis will be available with the delayed data on shares.

      Hope this has helped.

IG offer whats called “Linked Accounts” where you would individually have an account with IG but can then switch and trade on another parties account as long as you have a Power of Attorney set up. However you can only have a maximum of 3 POAs set up.

      Thanks for your question.

We’re currently in discussion with IG to determine whether this is possible for you and your granddaughter.

      We’ll be in touch! :)
